Hi guys,

I've bought myself a 3gs after having my orig iphone since it came out. I want to give my old one to my husband or step-daughter.

I bought my orig one off ebay which came unlocked and jailbroken, so previously when I've wanted to update the phone i've used pwg tool to re-jailbreak it - which was a bit of a faff to be honest and found that it slowed the phone down, esp. trying to re-boot it - it used to take ages.

Not looking to jailbreak the phone anymore, just have it unlocked. My O2 sim card works in it, but not my husbands vodafone one.

So what is the best way to go about it - is there any easier way - I had a look on the 02 website, but unless Ive got the orig sim - then I don't think they'll unlock it?

I'm happy to reset the phone etc, but just can't be bothered with the re-jailbreaking hassle just to update it!

Thanks for any advice.

O2 should unlock it, just make sure it's an o2 sim that's in it.

Original iPhones are easy to unlock yourself though. You will need to jailbreak using
Redsn0w to do it. Jailbreaking itself will not slow the phone down, certain programs you can install might though. The amount of truly useful stuff only available for jailbroken devices outweighs any minimal differences in speed (and they are minimal- I'm writing this on a jailbroken 2G and it's snappy as a stock phone).

As MrKev says, if you ring up O2 they will unlock it for you. When I cancelled my contract they just sent me a text saying my phone was now unlocked. If not then it is very easy to unlock the first gen iPhone yourself, although I recommend trying O2 first as jailbreaking can make the phone more unstable and unsecure if you don't change the root password.

Yeah it doesn't matter if it's not the original SIM. If you have an O2 contract SIM then just use that in the iPhone for a couple of calls and then fill out the form on the O2 website - should go through fine and not cost a penny. If you only have a PAYG SIM then it will cost £15 but again, it doesn't need to be the original SIM - you can even just go out and buy one brand new. It's probably an idea to at least have the iPhone on and with the SIM in first though, and perhaps dial out a couple of numbers (though no need to wait for them to actually answer) - just so O2 know the phone has been used with the SIM.
