He is an ancient, mythical fisherman named Steve who suddenly felt seasick.

you just need to expand your musical knowledge outside the top 10 singles chart.. I'm not even a fan of Seasick Steve but even I know who he is.

massively hyped and latched onto by the jools holland groupies. every drinker who's into live solo guitar music over the age of 35 reckons they knew about steve before he was on Later With Jools.
But they largely mis-remember the truth, and have joined the hypening of an artist beyond all reasonable levels in a manner that is absolutely no different to the way da kidz did with Matt n Luke Bros! Not groupis but grumpies - pretty much the same thing when i comes down to it! |

My dad adores Seasick Steve, and he has the album "I Started Out With Nothing, And I've Still Got Most of it Left" (great name imo), which is pretty good, but I'm not really into it, if you know what I mean?

Try reading about him on Wiki and listening to his music on Youtube and then you may not be so disrespectful.

I only heard of him last year. He played at one of the festivals maybe at Glastonbury? I've seen his name mentioned here and there, don't know much of about his music. From what I have seen of it though, I his stuff really boring.

Busked for his trainfare??? You should check-out his Norwegian tax returns .....over there it all gets published on the web you know.
They should enter that wiki page for the Booker prize. |

"Seasick Steve" is Steve Wold's "character". He's been a session player and studio worker for decades and is no hick.
I think he's incredible and it's a damn shame that his career is probably blighted by music industry ageism. |

It doesn't say anything about busking for trainfare on the wiki page. He's been rich for a while so I'd imagine that's just a rumour

He became quite well known after going on Jools' Hootenanny about 5 years ago.
I've only heard the Dog House Blues album, Fallen Off A Rock, Cut My Wings and Shirley Lou are my favourites, but it's all worth a listen. |

The various bits of information given by fellow posters confirm what I suspected-he is in with the 'right' people hence the nomination. I remember a few years back Cat Stevens being nominated similarly and I had a wtf moment as well (I did know who he was incedently). |

I'm not a massive fan but I have a couple of tracks by him and think he deserves his fame/reputation.
I'm no blues expert but I have listened to quite a lot and I quite like him (the ones I like the most are JB Lenoir and Slim Harpo). |

He was busking, but not for his trainfare. It was a publicity thing, playing on the fact that he used to live and play on the streets.

Oh no! That's really sad
![]() Sorry, I'm weird, I feel sorry for old people ![]() I dont think Seasick Steve or any other 'old person' wants your pity for that matter. Though saying that they might feel the same about whiny teenagers who spend their time crying over All American Rejects songs. |

Fair enough, but I'd say the likes of Seasick and Cat Stevens are more worthy of a nomination than some of the crap that won awards last night
I'd rather return to the panel or industry voters (whoever they are) picking the best single and best newcomer awards rather than go to the public vote. The list of nominees for best single was draw droppingly bad, Joe McElderry? That just sums things up.And it was a bad cover version. One the earliest Brits I can remember had people like Sade getting nomiated for Smooth Operator-that would never happen now. |

I had no idea who he was until his name came up during the Brits, but then that happens sometimes.
And yes, my musical knowledge does venture outside the UK Top 40. PS - Biko, lighten up lol |

So "Seasick Steve" is a character invented by Steve Wold .... very much like "Lady Gaga" is a character invented by Stefani Germanotta. Only difference is that Gaga hasn't invented a ridiculous backstory to go with the new image.
