New Puppy Question

Im getting a new puppy next week, a cross between a dalmation and a black lab.

I have a big kennel for the puppy which she will be locked in every night and Im getting a run for her, it'll be about 15 metres long and she'll be able to run all along it. Ideally she'll be let out for an hour in the morning with me around so she can run about, then when im going to work i'll tie her to the run, she'll still be able to run around but just confined to the length of the run. Then when I get back from work I will let her off again for awhile, possibly bring her into the house for a bit and also walk her.

She'll be tied to the run for an average 7 to 8 hours a day, during the week, however not everyday because some of my family will be about some days so she'll be able to run around with them while not being tied up.

Is this too cruel?
We live beside a busy road so im afraid if I leave her off then she'll just end up like our last dog and be roadkill.

I know there are electric fence perimeters I can get but they are just too expensive for me at the moment.

Are there any other cheap alternatives?

I wouldn't bother having a dog if you can't keep it secure. How would you like to be chained by the neck to a post restricting your movements?

If this is a serious post and not a wind up, then yes it is cruel. Don't get a dog.

I'm hoping it's a wind up too.
Don't get the dog, she deserves a better life.

Um......

Seriously?
Please don't get that puppy.
You cannot leave it chained up for 7-8 hours, even if it has a run.
And, a puppy on its own??

Come one, VERY cruel.
Don't do it.

I hope this is not true. If it is, you disgust me. Don't get a dog, you don't deserve one.

I would love a dog but know I can't have one as I am out working too much of the time.

Dogs need a lot of care and attention as they are pack animals. What you suggest about chaining up your dog for several hours will probably send the poor dog nuts.

Please do not get a dog if you cannot give it the time and attention it needs.

Speechless

This is cruelty beyond Why on earth would you need to tie it if you have a secure run?

Secondly, 8 hours is WAY too long to leave a dog on a regular basis - particularly a puppy - people do have dogs and work full-time, but they go to great lengths to ensure that they have someone coming in on a daily basis to see the pup (assuming they can't do it themselves).

All in all, I really would think seriously about getting this pup

(also praying it is a wind up)

OP - perhaps your heart is set on getting a dog and thats great....but yo CANNOT leave a puppy on its own for 7-8 hours, especially chained up like you describe.

Please please think again.
If you proceed with this plan it will be cruelty to the pup.

To echo others, please don't get a dog.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the love of God do not get a dog. Aside from the electric perimeter fence (are you crazy?) Leaving a dog like that is just downright cruel. If it is going to be locked in all day with nobody to look after it why the hell are you getting a dog as you clearly
1) Don't have a clue
2) Don't have the time for the poor dog
3) Sound like you cannot be bothered to look after the poor dog properly.

I would love to have a dog (i get to baby sit my mothers dog on the weekend if they go out for a day - she would never leave him alone for 8 hours on his own so if she is planning a day out then he stays with me).

As I work during the week I dont think it would be fair to have one and leave it on its own. My mother is retired so has the time to spend with her dog each day...

Please dont get a dog, it seems selfish to have one to spend time with just in the evening when you are home.

I've read the first couple of replies and agree with the posters -- and you should not be having a dog and definitely should not be "tying" a dog up at all! What happens if he gets tangled up, struggles and suffocates himself?

It sounds like you didn't take enough care over your first dog either... and to call what happened, "roadkill" sounds rather shocking to me!

OP, assuming that you are not a troll, please, please do not even BEGIN to consider getting this dog.

For all the reasons already listed above, which I'm not going to repeat - DO NOT GET A DOG.

Please ,please please don't get the puppy.I know it's been said before but if you don't have the time you can't keep a dog.I'm hoping you're a troll to be honest. But just to be on the safe side:PLEASE don't do this...

It sounds truly horrendous if you want my honest opinion.

Why do you want a dog?

That whole thing sounds terrible... the longest time we leave our 5 month old pup is an hour if we have to pop to town or something, if we are going to be out for longer we get someone to sit in the house with her...

Why do you want a dog if you're not even going to be with it for most of the day...

I hope the OP is a troll as they should not even be thinking of getting a pup just to tie him up all day long!!!

He's only posted once on the pet forum and is more often on BB or XF so I HOPE he's just a troll

You shouldn't be getting a dog at all.
If the comment about an electric fence was serious you should know that they don't always work, dogs learn that if they run fast enough at them they can break through so are a waste of a lot of money.
I hope you are just a troll.
