First Pay as You Go tarrif was a standard Vodafone tariff ...was something stupid like 35p per min and 15p per text.
First Pay Monthly was on Three for 500 minutes and 500 texts back when they launched for a LG KU800 or something. |

My husband remembers taking out a mobile contract in December 1993 for 12 months on Cellnet and he paid £15 a month line rental and also 50p a minute peak 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 20p minute off peak all other times. He paid £100 for the Sony CMH 333 (Mars Bar).

My first phone was the Nokia 3410 on O2 pay as you go......since then, I've gone through many phones and still have love for the Nokia 3410.

My first contract was with Cellnet (via a company called Uniqueair) It was a Nokia 101 which cost me £199, the tariff came with no minutes at all. Line rental was £25/month. Calls were 50p/min peak and 25p/min off peak (eve and weekend) Calls were charged at a minimum of 1 minute, and then in 30 second blocks after the first minute. I can still remember the number - 0850 267851 - I did just check (inserting a '7') to make sure the number is still dead! |

I remember this one too. It was a Philips phone thought wasn't it? 30p/min at all times and you could call 1 nominated landline for free (with a ceiling of 500 mins/month)
First contract was with Vodafone, £16.99 a month and free Nokia 3210 which was only out at the time

I remember having a Sagem 920. It was crap. If you wanted to text someone you had to write the number down first as you couldn't go through your phone list from some bizarre reason.

Mine was a Motorola C520 which I bought in 1999. I still have it in a box somewhere. It was on one2one pay as you go but I cant remember what the charges were. Something ridiculous like 75p a minute or something.

I had an old 'transportable' remember those back in the 80's!! Huge heavy things that looked the size of an office desk phone with a battery the size of a brick!
people used to be amazed i took my own phone to work and it had no wires! it was a proper corded handset to the base too! cant remember what it was called or how much we paid per month tho but it was with BT Cellnet and i still have the same number from my first phone! ahhh it was this panasonic http://www.rewindmuseum.com/brickphone.htm my mate has it now as a ornament! |

A Nokia RinGo on Vodafone (analogue) Pay as you Talk. Think it was 35p pm daytime and 5p per min after 6pm.
So much fun having my phone convo interrupted by another convo nearby. |

mine was a Nokia 1620 back in 1997
I was on the Bronze Tariff, with evening and weekend local and national calls free and free voicemail Later on when I went to work for one2one I was one of the testers for text messaging, you could only text the same network and it was £1 a month and 4p per text |

I remember the phone was a dark blue nokia, not sure of the model though, would love to remember
![]() and it was on vodafone, but I was only about 10 at the time, so wasn't too sure about the tariff at the time. Only used the phone to get in contact with my mum, or if she needed to get in contact with me. |

1992 - Cellnet ETACS
Phone - Motorola Personal (http://estb.msn.com/i/77/7D18EDA7564...D9C47311FE.jpg) "Lifetime for Leisure" - provided by service provider (SP) Call Connections (Who were ownded in a way by Cellnet - who are now O2 and have the same address - 260 Bath Road, Slough) £15.00/month Calls 50p/min Peak, 20p/min Off Peak Voicemail - 29p/min for DEPOSIT (Yes, for someone leaving you a message) - 39p/min to retrieve. Itemised Billing - 99p/month (got it as a promo - normally £2.94 a month) Peak - 8am to 7pm, Mon to Fri. Calls charged in 30 sec units after 1st full min. I can recite the rest of them, from my Vodafone Digital h/set after this (on Personal World) - to the introduction of per-second billing, to my first foray with Orange on Talk 60 (60 mins of landline and Orange calls for £29.38/month) - but I won't bore you.... unless you like?

My first mobile was also the Motorola C520. It was an absolute brick but at the time I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.I'm not even sure it was text message capable.
I was on an Orange tariff where you had to buy 'call time' at 50p a minute. So you would buy 10 minutes of call time for £5 and those minutes could be used to call any number. |
