Are the red button video streams viewable on "non freesat" mode ..

It would be good to record the bits of the Winter Olympics I want to see like the Ice Hockey... and that would seem the way to do it.

It's only been confirmed to work on Panasonic/LG TVs and the Technisat HDFS, the Humax and Harvard boxes can't do it unfortunately.

It is possible to record the red button screens on the Humax in 'freesat' mode to a separate DVD recorder - I do it using a scart connection from the Humax PVR to a Panasonic HDD/DVD recorder and it works perfectly. Of course you can't watch anything else at the same time but if you do want to record stuff specifically to keep or watch later then it works. If you don't already have a HDD/DVD recorder it would be an expensive solution though!

Really? I could have sworn Humax users have previously stated the red button channels cannot be picked up in non freesat mode- did a recent update change this?

I think Night Watchman may have been referring to 'attended' recordings of streams from the red button menu.

The Scart solution I hadn't thought of ...

just got to check which feed the game will be on b4 I go to bed .. and hope they dont change it.

Don't forget to disengage 'Automatic Standby' mode otherwise your PVR will go to standby after a certain time and you will miss part of the recording if it goes on too long.

I did specifically say 'freesat' mode not 'non-freesat' mode. No, AFAIK you still can't tune in the streams in non-freesat mode on the Humax. Unfortunately. But who knows what they have in store for us with future updates? But I suspect it is a niche market so won't be high on their agenda.

As jzee says in post#2 they are only available on certain brands of freesat units. If you have one of the ones mentioned you need to look for 7 streams named:-

'Stream-0' to
'Stream-6' inclusive

you'll need to scan 12441 vertical to find them.

Me too Nightwatchman to my Ex75..
I tried and studied XP and SP modes and settled for SP which as you know is 2hours on aDVD..
Is that the speed you use ?

What is on these streams? Being new to satellite I don't know what these are!

Hi - we staying in Spain and have a non freesat box and it's tune incudes Stream 0 to 6 - and you can watch them just like a normal TV channel - which is what they are but BBC builds them into the Red Button facility rather than showing them as descrete channels.

But in the UK we have a foxsat PVR - are you saying that they can be tuned as non freesat and recorded? We've had it over a year but I've never bothered with non freesat. I have always been record them on my 9200 and they work well.

Can you set non freesat channels to record with Freesat or is it only one or the other - Freesat or non Freesat?

LP normally - Panasonic is better at this speed than many of its rivals. I also have a Toshiba which allows manual choice of the bit rate - not just 4 pre-set speeds. But it depends on what I am recording - it is usually a compromise between quality and recording time or whether I plan to keep the recording or not or which screen I am going to watch it on.

Not on the Humax. But as I said in post 3 you can record them in freesat mode using the Scart output. But you can't watch another channel whilst doing this.


One or the other I am afraid. You can only programme recordings using the EPG in freesat mode but for non-freesat channels you can still record (but then without the timer programming facility) - just press the record button - it starts recording initially for a 2 hour block but you can alter that by pressing the record button again and adjusting the time - up to 10 minutes in single minutes and thereafter in blocks of 10 minutes. In non-freesat mode you can still watch one channel whilst recording another channel though just like you can in freesat mode.

I've tried a manual scan of 12441 and I get "no channels found". What am I doing wrong?

What freesat equipment are you using Graham?

It maybe that the streams are already stored from a previous scan and the equipment is actually reporting "no more channels found", in which case you'll need to call up the list of channels and hunt through to find the streams by name.

I've called up the list of channels and sorted by name but I can't see any named Stream etc!

You can't get it on the humax as posted in post#2.. the streams are flagged as data streams and the humax boxes ignore them.

your not missing much though at the moment as currently the streams are showing the olympics that is going out via the sports multiscreens. The only thing you're not going to be able to see is an interactive quiz for eastenders. :yawn:

I've got a Technomate TM 4200 Combo box as a secondary receiver. It does Freeview and Satellite. Also got a DiSEqC switch with 4 LNB's connected so can use it for multi-sat viewing.

It is perfect for getting the red button streams plus loads of other streams and channels. Not expensive, got it new couple of years ago for £60.

Not got all the whistles etc that some boxes have, but for £60..............

There are similar boxes available, saves a lot of messing about, and you just connect one of the Scarts to your recording system.
