To all you oldies out there, who do you think were the best songwriters and performers - Brothers Gibb/Bee Gees or Lennon & McCartney/Beatles? Personally I would say The Bee Gees but I'm sure a lot of people would disagree because of how popular the Beatles were.

I'm not wrong or right, it's just my personal preference. I think Lennon/McCartney were great, but just think the Bee Gees were better.

The Beatles were the most important and innovative band of all time who shaped modern pop/rock music as we know it

The Bee Gees sang in high voices

Not much of a contest.

The Beatles by far were the most influential songwriters in my opinion, of course as usual in a thread mentioning the Beatles on digitalspy someones going to say they were rubbish just to get attention.

You think the Beatles were rubbish? You're as entitled to your opinion as anyone.

But you're wrong.

No you are definitely wrong. To suggest the Bee Gees are better than the Beatles is laughable.

you arent wrong.... as a personal preferance you have every right to prefer who tf you want too...and the beegees are often overlooked because of their 'disco' phase. but in fact they DID write a most impressive portfolio of decent records. unlike 99.9% of other groups, after the beatles, the beegees are possibly the only other group who were successful by totally changing their style. i respect them for that.

i like their 60's material, i disliked their 'disco' phase.

factually though, no one compares to the beatles.

as a personal opinion, based on personal taste, they CANNOT be wrong!

they were expressing a personal opinion, not a statement of fact.

They're not comparable although Saturday Night Fever has remained an unbeatable soundtrack.

I think the Beatles are grossly over-rated.

Sure, they knocked out a few decent tunes, but I don't buy into the myth. They were a pop band and then they got into drugs and released some psychedelic stuff. Great.

I'd rather listen to the Bee Gees.

I prefer the Bee Gees because I love 70s Disco although the Bee Gees themselves where'nt actually a disco band.

The flip side to this was that some of the contribution to Disco was cheesy, which became the norm and killed off what was originally an underground and pretty leftfield scene.

That said, I cant deny the contribution the Beatles have made and I beleive there is only one word for John Lennon.....genius.

Both were great bands and songwriters but TBH I don't really listen to the Beatles, I would prefer to listen to a Bee Gees song anyday.

oh lord not another 'beatles are overrated' post ....

a myth is something that cannot be either proven nor disproven, a fact is something that can be either proven or disproven... you dont have to look far to find copious ammounts of evidence to see where the beatles fit in that!

personal taste though is another matter ... anyones free to dislike the beatles if they dont like the material .. fair play ... but really, no other group has influenced pop music like the beatles DID, that is a fact.

I like both bands but it's a bit like comparing apples with oranges.

Funnily enough I like the Bee Gees best in their 60s guise when they were Beatles copycats. They're undeniably very gifted songwriters, but perhaps lack genuine innovation and an air of mystery or magic.

I don't think The Beatles were over-rated, they were absolutely magnificent. But I do think the songwriting skills of The Beegees are often under-rated.

Both were/are excellent, to me.

Feel free to post links to the proof, then.

Until then, it's a myth.

You cannot compare The Beatles to the Beegees... They are both in completely different musical genres. It's like comparing Iron Maiden to Lady Gaga.

Beegees are disco, pure and simple...

Beegees were disco from 'Saturday Night Fever' and for a long time afterwards, but they've been around since 1966 and did a whole lot more than disco - pop and ballads being just two styles.

The Bee Gees are a lot more than disco. They were well established long before they started doing disco, and they have also written a lot of songs for other artists across different genres.

As a band I think the Beatles are well ahead of the Bee Gees, but as songwriters it is closer. I still think the Beatles are ahead, but when you discuss great songwriters you have to include the Gibb brothers.
