I guess all I can really say is that she smiles whilst skating......so what?

I suppose it depends what you think of as "extreme". Can't say I think a broad smile is exactly an extreme facial expression. Certainly not when you think of some of the weird facial contortions pulled by some of the Strictly dancers - and I include my absolute favourite Matthew Cutler in that!

It's the exaggerated look of the smile that annoys.

Maybe that's just what happens to her face when she smiles. Think of it as a physical characteristic that she can't change, just like Sharron's height or Kieron's slight build. Perhaps that will make what her face does when she smiles seem less annoying.

I find that no more plausible than if someone had said the SCD dance faces were just what happens when they smile.

And indeed, we see at other times that Hayley -- like the SCD dancers -- is perfectly capable of smiling in a natural-looking fashion instead.

Her mum may not have let her train as a skater due to doing other things, but I do not believe for a second that she didn't go skating regularly, as most kids being near a rink would. Therefore would at the very least have had basic skills, but probably a good deal more.

Melodybear - unless you actually have lessons it's very difficult to progress much beyond skating round in circles.

I live near Blackpool and would go skating on the odd occassion. I got quite good at whizzing round. Stop going from the age of about 16, took my kids the other week (I'm now 27) and I couldn't even let go of the side! Any basic skills I had as a child completely gone.

I totally agree. I used to train and compete in skating competitions when I was 13/14 and was actually pretty good. I gave up at 15 and went back on the ice this winter and could hardly stand on my own 2 feet. It's not like riding a bike at all - I lost all sense of balance, and it was really difficult

In future they should find someone who is a celebrity because they have captured the public eye for being a tone deaf, humourless, couch potato with a phobia about standing in front of a crowd and has the dance moves and personality of a festering carbuncle. Then nobody could say they have any sort of advantage over other contestants.

...and I love Hayley's smile

Yes, I agree, but even having skated around in circles, maybe at speed, could have helped at the start. Even if she hadn't done it for years, there would be a certain amount of confidence there, and I'm sure it would soon come back. Chris Fountain would have only whizzed round and round as an ice hockey player and he stood head and shoulders above the others in the first few weeks. Any sort of dance experience could be seen as an advantage also. Bonnie for example knew how to place her arms and legs and "finish moves. Her skating was pretty poor to start with, but she managed to look good.

So are you saying that the occasional skating around in a rink (if she has done it), has given her an unfair advantage? How should the producers control for this then? People might have all sorts of advantages, even inline skating or rollerblading might give you an advantage. Having done pilates might give you better core strength etc. I think it's more interesting to see what everyone does with their respective advantages (e.g. Jeremy wasn't able to transfer his dancing skills onto the ice).

Much as I'm not one to defend Hayley, surely quite a few of the contestants will have had some dance background, or ice-skating experience, this year, not just Hayley? They should be honest about it, but I don't see it should prevent them taking part or anything.

I read somewhere that Daniella had skated across the street on roller skates when she appeared in Eastenders when she was younger so maybe she has had some skating experience too?

No not an unfair advantage, but a basic background which would stand her (or anyone else) in good stead. I have no problem with it and agree it would be almost impossible to get people with no dance or performance background. Also it would mean shows with 14 Dr Hiliarys or Todd Carty

Now that would be depressing. Generally, I think they probably should own up if they have previous experience, and then we can judge ourselves whether there is any improvement from their own baseline.
