Poor Dot gets cancer.

Yet another fun story-line from Eastenders scriptwriters.

Lighten up for gawd`s sake!

It could be a good storyline - but it won't be. EE will go over the top as usual. Mind you, I don't much like Dot Cotton - sometimes she's good, but a lot of the time I don't find her believable as a character.

Another boring storyline for a boring character.

So is it going to be lung cancer?

I'd imagine so. The amount of fags she smokes I'm surprised she didn't get cancer 30 years ago.

and what an exciting message board this would be if we all sat around whinging about programmes we don't like with really interesting and constructive criticism

i guess Mark has gone so it's time for another terminal illness. i think it would have a better impact if it were one of the younger characters though, Dot's well past her sell-by date anyway.

I think EE could make this into a really good story - if they get it right! not something that they milk too often and everyone is affected by cancer at some point in their life, so a lot of people can relate.

Hey let's not knock it until we've seen it!

Everyone's so negative! (me included usually). I do find myself wondering if they will handle it well, but I think it's a potentially good storyline -- the best I've heard of in a long while for EE (okay, that's not saying much). I never used to be a Dot fan but changed my opinion after the storyline with Ethel's death.

The Ethel/Dot storyline a couple of years ago was excellently done, funny, touching and well acted; okay not the happiest subject but managed to avoid being overly morbid. But that was a while ago, and like the rest of you I'm not confident the writers will be able to make something worthwhile out of this latest one.

Stories about sick people are boring.
A soap should be fun and exciting, like Coronation Street or Sons & Daughters.
You won't catch me feeling sorry for a soap character !

You've hit the nail on the head. I've lost confidence in the writers.

There are a good few who I've been devastated for in the past.. never in EE though.

This storyline is going to drag on and on and will be filled with monologue after monlogue.. EE is sooooo serious in mood it's no wonder it's losing fans rapidly..

We'll have to endure loads of five minute scenes between Dot and Jim, Dot and Sonia, Jim and Sonia, Sonia and Martin, Martin and Pauline, Dot and Pauline etc. then.

Mark died of cancer, as did Ethel. Can't they come up with something less morbid for the character?

At least they aren't as bad as Home and Away, which will have four characters all getting cancer in less than a year!

Yipee, can hardly wait for such a gripping storyline, it'll be just like all the other very similar storylines..ONLY!! different

Roll on the next cleverly written storyline, where pat upon bleaching her hair again suffers a terrible freak accident thus melting half her face off, oh the joys of following her through such a traumatic experience.

then it'll be the young newly wedded martin discovering from months of man handling black market genecticly modified vegetables, his gone and caught himself a flesh eating disease around the genitals, oh the woes of it all!! the poor couple!

Come on reality check here! please.

This is a soap that is trying to portray normal life, Cancer unfortunatly affects many people in this country.

And doesn't just affect one person in an area and goes onto the next, many people will come down with one form of cancer or know some, at the moment in the small village where I live, I know of 3 people who were all diagnosed with 3 weeks of each other.

So long as EE doesn't sensationalise this storyline to much it has the makings of a good period.

Seeing how everone is constantly in a smoky pub, and the fact that she smokes like a chimny, It really doesn't surpirse me!

If the way she looks hasn't done it!

Pauline isn't a smoker in EE is she? Yet she is in real life, isn't she? She's a definite advert for not smoking/avoiding sun beds.

Doesn't Wendy Richards have Cancer - or has just fought it ?
She doesn't look that bad when out of EE makeup and wardrobe

They really ought to tell Wendy Richard to slap on the SP15, where on earth would Pauline have got that tan in Walford in April? Her skin's more weathered than her handbag

Sorry haven't brought up the quote but -- why wouldn't you feel sorry for someone in a soap? E.g. Todd in Corrie, feel very sorry for him (in a good way). And Corrie did a very 'strong' cancer storyline with Alma (bit too quick to be realistic, but well done). So I have no objection to 'miserable' storylines as such. BUT, thing is, Corrie do drama, EE do melodrama. Badly.

If EE is going to attempt this type of storyline they need to leaven it with a bit of humour in other storylines. I really have given up on the writers and storyliners, unless they get a rocket up them I can't see anything changing in the foreseeable.

She had breast cancer a couple of years ago.

I thought she looked a joke under her black mourning hat, her haggard face and orange complexion made her appear like a pantomime witch..

Yeah, like I've said before, I felt absolutely devastated for poor Toyah Battersby. That storyline made watching corrie really gutting. I think it could easily be said it was one of the most disturbing of the street's plots..
