I have had this happen a lot over the last few years sometimes an 'album version' of a track is different to the 'hit', 'single', or 'radio' version or the version that's used in the music video.

Happened to me when I unearthed an old Cassette single of a song called ''Kelly Watch The Stars'' by Air last week and played it and remembered what a great track it is, so went onto itunes to download a better quality copy for my pc/mp3 player and when I downloaded it (as a track from the Moon Safari album) I find this version is totally different the version I had on the cassette single So now going to buy a copy of the CD single from ebay (to rip to mp3).

Other examples where the version on the 'album' is different to the version in the music video that I know of.

The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Stereophonics - The Bartender & The Thief
The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums
Super Fury Animals - Something For The Weekend
Reel Big Fish - Where Have You Been
Snow Patrol - Chocolate
The House Of Love - Destroy The Heart
Semisonic - Secert Smile
Semisonic - Closing Time

earliest example I can think of is 'Crazy' by Britney Spears. I prefer the radio/video version to the album version.
Also, 'can't get it back' by misteeq. again, I prefer the released version.

Oh another (sort of) one is Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over where the version in the music video and on 'The Best Of Crowded House' and Itunes are all the same but there is a totally different version of it on 'Now that's what I call music 35' (which I like better) it's slightly faster and has a noticeably different baseline, although clearly lower musical production so my educated guess is it's original demo used by mistake.

Killers - All These Things That I've Done

the single/video/radio version starts from the guitar riff which doesnt start until around 50 seconds on the album version

also on the US video version the choir does backing vocals during the last bit

Hearing Sweet child of mine is destroyed on the radio the single cuts out most of the guitar solo and makes it sound crap.

This is something that has happened many times over the years.

All Right Now by Free, and Fox On The Run by Sweet are just two examples from the 70s.

Loads of Pet Shop Boys singles were different to the album version. The earliest examples were Suburbia and Heart, which were completely remixed for single releases.

Kylies 'Chocolate' and 'Come Into My World' were both remixed for single release. Nothing groundbreaking but CIMW sounds a lot more polished then the album version because she re-recorded the vocals which she felt were rushed on the original.

Michael Jacksons 'HIStory' was very radically remixed too - although technically this single was from the remix album and not the original HIStory album.

Yes, they have had loads. Yesturday, When I Was Mad and I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing are two of my favourites. Also Jelously which sounded a lot more natural on it's single release.

The Saturdays - Up. Album version is horrible, single version fantastic.

Owl City - Fireflies. Album version is fantastic, single version is horrible.

That remix couldn't be any more different than the original version and it's a LOT better (IMO) I'd actully heard the original first on that album before the remix (my older sister kept playing it) and I didn't like it but I loved what the remix had done with it when that came out. It's the true example when someone had totally succesfully polished a turd (IMO).

Girls Aloud - Untouchable.

The one that's been released has removed the best part of the song.

The album version is much better.

Black eyed peas's radio version on Heart fm is terrible. They play one verse and just repeating the bridge and chorus.

Poker face's radio version cuts out my favourite bit where she says "i won't tell you that i love kiss or hug you" bit

They cut out the french bit in Bad Romance

I could go on how the radio edits annoy me. Some are good. Like for Rehab by Rihanna. It goes a minute longer then it should do which just no words but just the intrumental. Where as the radio version cuts that bit out.

In The World We Live In by The Killers they cut out the best bit.
The Smiths had a few singles that were different, off the top of my head, The Boy With The Thorn In His Side and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

Here's another odd one but the 2007 Comic Relief version of the Proclaimers "I'm gonna be (500 miles)"

In the video itself after Andy Pipkin goes "what's haver mean?" Brian points at the monitor and says "it's on here", theres a bit where Lou Todd says "Ladies and gentlemen the procliamers" and the bit near the end where Brian shouts "Bobby Dravo" they cut all that out on the audio verison which really annoyed me because I really liked those bits (even without the picture) so I ripped the audio off the actul video version itself for my mp3 of it.

What about You've Got The Love by Florence + The Machine?

The single and video version is awful, just empty, but the album version is absolutely fantastic

More recently, Marina + The Diamonds is changed.

Hollywood - The first verse is about 4 lines longer. I love both versions but the cut seemed rather unnecessary to be honest. The song works with or without it.

The Uk edit for If you seek amy. They actually cut the If you seek amy bit. It's just "love me hate me say what you want about me" and then it goes blank.

Just remembered something the UK and continental european versions of 2 Unlimited - No Limit are different. The CE version has this rap bridge segment which was removed and replaced with the 'Techno, Techno, Techno, Techno, Techno, Techno" bit in the UK version.

and someone made their own master edit which combined elements of the 2 versions into one track and put it on youtube for a while which is the version I've got on my mp3 player.

I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing is probably the PSB's worst ever remix. The original version on Very is a cracking little pop song which probably shouldn't have been chosen as a single as the running time was too short. The remix had a really quite nasty instrumental section in it to lengthen the song, and I make it a priority never to listen to it.

The full length version of Left to My Own Devices on Introspective should be required listening for the entire Human race, if only for the extra verse with some supremely good lyrics.

I think most of Mary J Blige's single releases from What's the 411? were remixed for single release. Mega rare now as most weren't big hits back in 1993 and the CD singles have probably been deleted for the best part of 16 years. SWV (remember them?) singles used to be alot more 'street' than the album versions but I think they did release a remix album.

It's quite annoying that iTunes don't include single versions where there are two versions of the same song

I think the record labels used to give single versions of songs more 'oomph' for radio play - usually shorter with more of a hook that sticks in your head. prob why a lot of people prefer the CD single versions of songs....
