Nokia 5800 - Why the Sell Off...?

....I've recently purchased (from eBay) a Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone (all boxed / excellent condition / good price with 3 months warrantee still remaining)...

I was astounded when doing a search on eBay the number of people selling their 5800's... I found at least 30 of all prices and condition ect.

Is there another NEW Nokia due in the pipeline or are they all going to Apple iPhone ? (I know about the new'ish 5300) but is there another model on the way ??

The X6 is the successor to the 5800.

I suppose it has been out a bit and people are maybe due an upgrade and are selling there old phone. Also people get bored easily. Anyway enjoy your 5800 - it's a cracking phone and even better with the free sat nav!

Nokia have a few new touch screens coming up or just released (check there web site).
I guess many people are 'due' an upgrade so take it (as they like the tariff?) and sell the phone they get for 'free'?

Not sure the X6 is a direct replacement for the 5800 though, just another new phone.....

Alot of people are jumping ship to the Android platform, and I cannot blame them.

It's an actual viable alternative to the iPhone.

No, I've got an iPhone. I just wondered as everyone seems to rave about the 5800 on here.

I had a 5800 for a few days, and gave it to my step son.

I didn't like it, but he reckons its pretty good. The UI just didn't flow.

I've just picked up a Nokia 5230, its the same basic design but with a much updated firmware. Which makes it a pretty good phone. Kinetic scrolling works perfectly, installed Opera and I've got a browser equal to that on an iPhone.

Apparently v40+ firmwares bring a lot of the 5230 usability to the 5800. And the later firmwares also increase the CPU speed from 369mHz to 400+, making for a much faster device.

Ive never had any problems with my 5800, had it nearly a year and love it to bits. I don't even plan to upgrade when my contracts up for renewal.

(so long as the phone is still functioning)

The 5230 has no wifi and only a 2 Mpix camera. I can't see what the attraction is compared to a 5800 or 5530

I got rid of my 5800 as I quickly found out I couldn't stand any touchscreen phones but as a phone it was pretty good. The only thing I thought let it down was the poor camera - it was ok in bright conditions but indoors the pictures came out grainy.

Oh and the socket for the charger was at the top of the phone so when I had it charging in my car, the charger cord was quite stretched.

Other than that the 5800 is a decent handset (for those who don't end up scooping their own eyeballs out trying to use a touchscreen).

The camera in the 5800 and 5530 is utter rubbish. Whilst my stepson does like the 5800, both him and his mum (I'm divorced) have said that the camera is rubbish. Which it is.

No WiFi is really, really minor. Decent data tariffs are readily available. And the 5530 has no 3G, so out and about you'd be relying on finding a WiFi point - invariably at work that isn't possible (WiFi is generally for visitors only).

And think of the price - the 5230 is HALF THE PRICE of the 5800. £100 extra for an equally lousy camera with 50% more pixels, wireless support and a less mature firmware?

The charging socket at the top is irritating - same thing on the N85, N86, etc. Strange, or even bad design.

I didn't like the 5800, but the 5230 firmware has been a revelation.

Depends where you live. I a thankful that WiFi is included on my phone as is the wife on here 5800. If fact it was the reason I brought her the 5800 (that and GPS).
Different parts of the world have different needs and by removing features the cost can be adjusted accordingly. I current live in India where there is no 3G network so have a 5530 makes sense for now. However I have WiFi at home (and work) so appreciate the faster browsing experince. I believe the. Either the 5520 or 5230 had no GPS (I forget which) which may be an issue for some. I certainly appreciate the Ovi maps

Across the 3 models there should be something to suit everyone

From what I know both the 5530 and 5230 have GPS. The issue seems to be that in some areas the GPS is disabled on them.

Even in the UK the 3G networks can offer patchy coverage, dropping back to GPRS or edge, so I understand where you're coming from.

And right now in the UK the 5230 has been further discounted - down from £100 to £80! Utterly amazing price.

According to Nokia website (UK pages)

5530 - Has WiFi, no 3g, No GPS
5230 - Has 3g , has GPS, No WiFi

Where I say no, I mean it is not listed in the specifications!

Bizarre, I thought it had GPS. I'd heard about the 5230 in some countries having it disabled ... depends on your usage, but the 5230 seems like a much better deal now.

£80 is a bargain, agree with that if you have a decent 3G data bundle

Which is probably why the camera manufacturers make different spec phones for different needs.

I got a 5800, brand new, not even open with 8gb card as I only got it with the tariff and using that in an Iphone. I want to sell it on ebay, how much does anyone recommend?

I've had a Nokia 5800 for about 3 months now and I'm very impressed and does all I ask of it.

The phone streams internet radio extremely well using either Real Player or Tunewiki, this being the main reason I wanted the 5800. It also streams videos and TV with no trouble what so ever.
Images can easily be linked to music tracks which makes playing mp3s look better.
The internet connection is excellant using either the built in browser or Opera.
I use Google's email service along with Nokia Messaging and with Thunderbird which I use on my PC my emails can be sent either from my phone, PC or remotely through another PC and all emails are linked and brought together on my PC at home.
The GPS mapping is very good, Google being slightly better if you're in an area with a reasonable signal, failing that Nokia's own mapping is not to be knocked.
And there are numerous free apps at the OVI store such as Tunewiki, Opera, Gmail, Weatherbug etc along with many you may want to buy.
The camera, it's OK but then again if you want to take good phots use a proper camera, the size of the lens on a phone will never produce the same results as a camera.
And, Oh yes, it also makes phone calls.

Can someone tell me what else they want a phone to do?

If Neil Armstrong had a 5800 in 1969 he wouldn't have overshot his intended landing site in the moon.

That's what I did, I liked the 5800 but it comes a poor second to my HTC Hero.
