Recommend me a Restaurant
I'm looking for a Restaurant for a pre-theatre meal on the 31st May in London for a "significant" birthday - we've done the Ivy a couple of times and I'm a bit stuck for ideas - we prefer British food to anything else - any ideas?

What did you think of The Ivy? Is it as good as it is always made out to be or is it style over substance?

There is a Jasper Conran restaurant I ate in and the food was amazing. Good atmosphere nicely over priced. Begins with a Qu but I googled and can't find it so maybe its changed names or hands.

Could it be this one? Think Conrad Restaurants are now D&D's? |

Pity it has to be British. Some good friends of ours recently had a meal at Atul Kochhar's restaurant Benares. They said it was exquisite, the finest meal they'd ever had. They have been to many Michelin restaurants all over Europe but they couldn't praise this particular restaurant highly enough.

To be honest, I think that a "significant" date has to be either dinner or the theatre but not both - it all becomes too rushed for true enjoyment. Unless of course you wish to start eating at about 5.30 - and a lot of top English restaurants don't start serving till about 6.30 at the earliest.
How about a slap up tea at the Ritz or Savoy instead? You can eat your fill at about 5pm with delicious sandwiches and cake and then saunter to the theatre still full. Have a lovely box of chocolates at the theatre and if you are hungry when you come out, there should be innumerable restaurents like tapas bars or Indian or Chinese to take your pick from. You can go online to TimeOut to get the nearest good ones. PS Indianwells - I totally agree about Benares. I've eaten there and at Tamarind - and both were scrummy. |

I like the Orrery. Good food and it's not overly fussy . Might be a bit of a schlep for the theatre district.

we really enjoyed it, we've been 3 times over the past few years, yes it is very expensive £300 for 3 people last time we went but my Mother-in-law who we took for her birthday was chuffed to bits especially as she spotted a few famous people

Does Jasper Conran own a restaurant? I thought he was a designer? Do you mean Terence Conran?

If you like the Ivy, why not try Le caprice. it's part of the same group and I think the fodd is much better but it still has a very "high End" feel. Less celebs though.

"Or, if you like fish, J Sheekey. Again, it's the same chain and it's well placed for theatre-land. "
Oh yes, very nice, though I remember the tables being very close together. |

If you like steak then I can recommend Gaucho in Swallow Street, Piccadilly.
