Ok I recently got my phone unlocked but some of the keys aren't working properly. I understand that the phone had to be opened to be unlocked (i.e. it wasn't done remotely), will I still be able to claim under my warranty or is it now void?

You can organise a replacement if you are under the 12 months warranty, and personally I wouldn't mention that it's unlocked or been tampered with.

However, you wouldn't get a unlocked phone back.

Incidentally, which network are you with and is it a contract phone ?

Yeah didn't think I would get it back unlocked

I'm with O2 but originally bought the phone from Orange and no it's a PAYG phone.

Also does anyone know if Orange will provide a receipt for the phone? I bought it online from the Orange shop but lost the receipt although I know the order number and date of purchase.

What phone is it? Most of them don't require opening up to be unlocked, and if that's the case the unlocking can't have anything to do with the buttons busting!

By law you have at least 12 months warranty on anything purchased. The actual wording says something woolly like "reasonable time" or something like that.
Anything extra provided by your credit card company or the phone manufacturer is in addition to your statutory rights.

The place you purchased the phone from is responsible for the repair of the phone. Repair is the only thing you are entitled to after 30 days. The supplier can at their discretion issue you with a replacement phone - but this will not always be a new one.
If they try to fob you off by telling you to take/send it to a service centre, this is illegal. Your contract is between you and them as a supplier.

As you purchased online there should be a paper trail to follow.
First thing I would try is contacting Orange. They should have a record of the transaction with the date it was made.
Second you should look for statements from your credit card which should show the transaction. This will be enough if Orange demand that you provide a proof of purchase. However as it was an online purchase it shouldn't be required.

Check the Government's excellent consumer rights web site at http://www.consumer.gov.uk/consumer_web/index_v4.htm for more information on where you stand.

Simon.

It's a Sagem myx-6. In that case then it's a massive coincidence because all the buttons were working correctly before it was unlocked and it's only 4 months old!

Well as I said it depends exactly how it was unlocked; many of them just require a connection to the multi-way connector on the bottom, then some custom software running which removes the network lock.

If this is the case, then YES, it is just a massive co-incidence that the buttons buggered up after it was unlocked!!
