Jack has a real dark side. It's not the first time he's used his fists. He'd have us believe he's from the old school, of thinking that kind of discipline's acceptable, but he's an abusive bully - verbally as well as physically. He screamed at Victoria with frustration because she wasn't talking. When he was laying into Robert, he had no concern that she was listening and scared in the other room.

i agree. He is in a difficult situation bringing up kids on his own, one of which is adopted and accidentally killed Jack's wife. However, there's never any excuse for violence and it's hardly surprising Victoria wouldn't tell him what was wrong!

Yeah he's aggressive, but I wouldn't say a "bully".

It's impossible to have any sympathy for Robert and Katie and I don't blame him (see other thread) for going off on one. Oh and Robert scared Victoria into silence by threatening her, leaving Jack to think anything could've happened. Of course he's going to go mad...pretty natrual, I thought. He would never deliberately hurt Victoria and it's plain to see he's damn sorry the few times he shouts at her/in her presence.

I don't blame him for smacking robert... if he was my son i would of done the same.

Gosh I'll be surprised if they kill Jack off - he's the Ken Barlow of Emmerdale. Not the most exciting person in the world, but you just expect him to be there as he's as much a part of the fixtures and fittings as the sheep! ( you do remember that sheep, back in 1985, don't you?? )

He is NOT a bully. A bully is someone who is calculatingly cruel. Jack is an angry concerned parent who lost it for a few seconds

And actually a bully does not have to be calculating, just overbearing or intimidating. Both of which Jack was to Victoria, and Katie.

A bully is somebody who intimidates somebody smaller and weaker then they are. You don't need to be calculating to terrify a little girl by snatching her toy out of her hand and hurling it against the wall so it breaks.

Which makes Jack one big fat bully IMO.

A lot of wife beaters don't plan to go home and beat up their families - they lose control because they can't control their temper/drink. They're all sorry the first time. And they're all bullies.

I'm not getting in to the agument about whether he's a Bully or not, as I haven't watched Emmerdale very often in the last year or two.

But from what I've read, it sounds that they are just being true to the character. Jack has always let his anger get the better of him, and he's always felt guilty of it afterwards!

Exactly...he can be aggressive and short-tempered, but it's not very often and never does huge amounts of damage...calling him a bully is a bit much if you ask me. Under the circumstances I don't blame him and I'd expect someone to hit me if I did that...well, hear my side of the story first before hitting me of course . Losing your temper is human nature and he quite obviously cares about Victoria and was scared to death of what might've happened, and likewise appalled at what was being done to Andy. The reaction's not always sensible, but it's understandable...
