I don't know how I'd even begin to answer that... too many options.

Maybe "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"?

My first thought was possibly a Smiths track as well, but then I figured it was far too hard to decide.

I could start listing some but I'd end up hundreds...

Very very good song it is, but I wouldn't call it Indie.

The definition of Indie has changed awfully.

I wouldn't class most of those as Indie.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps - alt rock
Interpol - NYC - Alt Rock
Animal Collective - My Girls - pop rock
Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream - pop rock
Empire Of The Sun - We Are The People - pop rock
The Strokes - Reptilia - pop rock
Muse - Plug In Baby - rock/alt rock
Bloc Party - So Here We Are - pop rock
Interpol - Obstacle 1 - Alt Rock
Bloc Party - Banquet - pop rock
Interpol - Evil - Alt Rock
Metronomy - Heartbreaker
Elbow - Fugitive Motel - alt rock
Hercules And Love Affair - Blind - electro pop
PJ Harvey - Good Fortune - she's a singer songwriter that has done different genres

They're all lumped into the "indie" scene, though. Lets not get picky with sub genres and sub-sub-sub genres and the likes

Personally, some of my favourites are:

- Yeah Yeah Yeah - Y Control
- Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now
- Klaxons - Atlantis to Interzone
- Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure
- CSS - Alala
- Gossip - Listen Up
- Kasabian - Club Foot
- Kings Of Leon - Fans
- MGMT - Kids

If you wanted, you could include people like Bjork, Sigur Rós, Bat For Lashes, Peaches etc... in there (some of my faves) but I'll stick to a more "now" definition of indie

You want to be careful on this forum when questioning the meaning/definition of indie. Some people get nasty.

Fortunately, no-one who's commented on this thread so far though.

Your definitions of indie are interesting, considering Bloc Party are on an indie label while Stone Roses signed with Geffen Records.

Also, The Strokes, Bloc Party, Animal Collective and Empire of the Sun sound nothing alike and are clearly very different styles, yet you class them all as "pop rock"?

Hmmm I think you need to brush up on your understanding of Indie. It isn't a genre. It is the label they are signed too, that is technically indie and I know for a fact Bloc Party are an indie band because they are signed to an independent label, wichita. Oh, and calling Banquet and So Here We Are pop rock is almost insulting.

LOL

The Stone Roses were indie - the beginning of Indie. Without The Stone Roses, there would be no Indie.

Here - chew on that.

They're pop rock. Sorry but it's not Indie. Just a bunch of guys writing songs about nothing in particular.

No you're wrong. Brush up on your music history.

Indie was based upon a sound that was coming from bands signed to independent record labels in the late 80s - later this "sound" the "sound" being important was attached to bands.

Yeah? Cool.

Bands with independent labels are not all indie - indie and independent are two different things now.

Really - read up on your music history.

I hate how this argument always comes up.

It's pretty obvious that, today, on a whole, indie is used to describe a certain category of music, just like "hip hop" or "dance" is. It also refers to independent labels, but less so in every day speech.

I agree. I wouldn't call The Stone Roses indie if I had my way but unfortunately/fortunately (depending on how you look at it) they created a completely new sound. They merged the folky shoegaze stylings with funky guitar techniques from disco after a whole decade of electronica and were completely new.

Why weren't they prog rock? Their debut was ground breaking with great lyrics but to cut a long story short - let's blame the media for giving them that label and forcing all these kids to wear their skinny jeans around their bums, where beanies so they look like they have tefal heads and eat nothing to the point of malnutrition.

I've not actually claimed The Stone Roses weren't indie, i was just pointing out something in your definition.

As you want to reference Wikipedia though:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_music

In popular music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.

Independent labels have been known to strive for minimal influence on the artist they represent, avoiding the artist-cultivating behavior of many major labels.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone_Roses

The band released their debut album, The Stone Roses, in 1989. The album was a breakthrough success for the band. At this time the Stone Roses decided to capitalize on their success by signing to a major label; however, their current record label Silvertone would not let them out of their contract, which led to a long legal battle that culminated with the band signing with Geffen Records in 1991, and then finally releasing their second album Second Coming in 1994.
Just a bunch of guys writing songs about nothing in particular.
Meaning you either don't understand their lyrics or you've never actually listened to them.

If we were talking about some generic, bland, stereotypical, floppy haired "indie" band of today, you might have a point. Bloc Party are anything but.

Thanks for posting information to prove my point

They are a bunch of guys writing songs about nothing in particular. It is a gross misfortune of our times that record companies can force young impressionable minds to listen to music that doesn't shape and let them grow.

If people today had great albums like I had, we wouldn't have the troubles we have, like people failing to grasp the nature of indie music.

Oasis- Live Forever (hey, they were indie when they released that)
The Cribs- Another Number, We Were Aborted, Our Bovine Public
Ride- Vapour Trail
Primal Scream- Movin' On Up, Come Together, Cant Go Back
The Jesus and Mary Chain- Just Like Honey
Reverend and the Makers- Heavyweight Champion of the World
Babyshambles- Albion, Kilamangiro, Beg, Steal or Borrow
The Libertines- Music When the Lights Go Out, Vertigo, Death on the Stairs (I could go on but I'll stop at risk of sounding like a broken record!)
The Smiths- Panic
Stone Roses- She Bangs the Drums, Made of Stone

Im noticing a trend with my favourite indie bands...all bar one are/were signed to either Wichita, Creation or Rough Trade...Creation was a hell of a Label!

Dont know if thats the definition of indie everyone was looking for but Ive stuck with bands on indie label...Id love to include Kasabian because I think their style is quite "indie" but they're a mainstream label band through and through!
