How can you tell when they're cooked?

Some recipes say boil covered for 2 hours, & others I've read say 1 hour 15.

What consistency should they be when cooked?

I want to make hummus but I've never cooked chickpeas before.

I got chikpeas the other day.

Soaked for 9 hours, boiled for 15 minutes, then left them to simmer for an hour and 10 minutes.

Not dead as yet

Buy tinned it's so much easier and you can get them dirt cheap if you look in the Asian sections of Tesco and Morrisons.

If you do want to cook them they will still feel firm but you will be able to squash them between your fingers. I believe you can speed the process up in a pressure cooker if you like having high pressure containers sitting on your stove.

I have never been bothered to buy dried chickpeas. The tins ones are so cheap and taste fine (to me, anyway).

If you have a large supermarket always look in the "World Food" isle as things like chickpeas and other ingredients will always be cheaper than those from the usual brand names. This is especially true with coconut milk - my Tesco has an Indian brand which is less than half the price of the one found next to the curry sauces in jar. (Who pays that kind of money for sauces in jars anyway? All they are are tomatoes with some herbs and spices)

Thanks for your advice.

I got some tinned ones today being as I totally messed it up last night as I added to much cumin.

Apart from the fiery burn, it was lovely
