do people think her single and album sales will increse now she is in the news. it happens all the time and i would think an artist like cheryl would be a prime example of making money on the counts of her divorce (music wise - i don't mean selling her story cuz she likes to keep it private she has quoted before) what do others think ????

Without a shadow of a doubt - most of the people who buy music today do it for every other reason apart from the music being good.
We are a nation of sheep and that is why Simon Cowell loves us.

oh yes lol i just found this

Cheryl Cole is expected to enjoy a surge in music sales following her separation from husband Ashley.

According to a music industry insider, publicity surrounding the split will increase interest in Cole's solo material and merchandise.

"We find from previous experience of artists being in the press - very often it can actually help their profile. Controversy doesn't actually damage their careers - it can very often aid it," said HMV spokesman Gennarao Castaldo.

Cole's debut album 3 Words, which topped the charts in November, is currently still in the UK top 40.

Meanwhile, new single 'Parachute' has risen three places to 17 in the midweek charts. The track is physically released on March 15.

Fellow X Factor judge Louis Walsh has claimed that Cheryl will be "fine" following the split.

It's difficult to keep decking a cloakroom attendant private.

I may be wrong but this sort of thing tends to happen in pop music more than any other. For example, I doubt if Foo Fighters sales went up much just because Dave Grohl got divorced. Is this because pop fans buy music because the artist is in the news and aren't actually very bothered about what the songs actually sound like? After all, Cheryl's music hasn't magically improved in the last 2 days.

Music sales are decided by the media. Music has little to do with it anymore. Media coverage dictates record sales.

If the media fawns over or is interested in an artist (Lily Allen, Cheryl Cole, etc) and they fit what the media's rigid notions of what performers should be (i.e female artists dressing like tarts), then they get massive coverage.

Musicians who don't "fit" what the media want (or who don't have a famous dad or other media connection) are pretty much ignored or sneered at.

Well, that's just it - Cheryl Cole did not sell all the records that she did because she made good music, it was based on people admiring her and her media image as a whole... throw in the late sympathy for her (and she is being played as the victim) and the record label will really be cashing in.

Throw in a 'rebellious' f**k men follow-up single, a lá Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and Rihanna, she'll really rake it in...

It's bad really that people will buy someone's image because they happen to seen a nice person who is goodlooking and a role model to girls. Where as i just look at her as popstar who is singing catchy songs. I couldn't care if she was a bitch, a druggy or a secret tranny. If the songs are good, then I'm not bothered about image wise.
