Wetherspoons vs Slug & Lettuce
We are playing taxi driver tonight and so have over two hours to kill in a strange town!
I've been told that there's a Wetherspoons pub and a Slug and Lettuce pub close to where we are going - any suggestions as to which is best? We're not vegetarian and don't have any special dietary requirements. I've loked at both of their menus and S & L looks expensive compared to Wetherspoons but it's curry night at the latter... |

S&L is middle class and pricy
Spoons is low but does a great range of beer and food at a cheap price. |

Personally I don't think the S&L food is that much better than Wetherspoons. Wetherspoons is always good for a cheap night out.

Another vote for S&L from me - it's much nicer (IMO) than Weatherspoons!

I'd always go for Wetherspoons given the choice. S&L just up prices for much the same thing (including drinks).
I know because they are adjacent to each other in Edinburgh's Omni Centre - 'Spoons is always busier with good reason. G |

The two places are just about the complete opposite as prices go. Wetherspoons is quite remarkably cheap both for drinks and food, though I think coffee and soft drinks are normal prices.
The main problem about some Wetherspoons is , especially in city centres, they attract shall we say riff raff. Have a glance in both places before you decide where to go. |

No idea what strange town your going to but @ the Wetherspoons you are guaranteed a cook rather than a chef who is master of controlling the microwave and a deep fat fryer. On the plus side it is cheap and cheerful.
At the S&L hopefully you get homecooked food by a chef rather a cook. May cost a bit extra but that is for you to determine how much of a factor that is. For a drinking session, cheap and cheerful @ Wetherspoons. If hoping for a decent feed, S&L.

Didn't realise S&L is also a chain, I've never heard of them. I guess both places ship in pre packed items so much of a muchness.
I'd personally go for a curry at an indian rather than a curry at a Wetherpoons or look for an independant resturaunt. |

I do like the Gourmet burger in Wetherspoons, plus there is the burger meal deal which includes the price of a drink. I accept it can be a rowdy in there sometimes(depends which one you go and time of day).

Comparing S&L and Wetherspoons is like comparing Dido and Katie Melua - they're both a bit bland and middle of the road, and essentially do the same thing!

Good point - if the Wetherspoons is a bit rowdy, you may be able to use the 25% off voucher on the S&L website http://www.slugandlettuce.co.uk/promotions/
Have a nice evening

Not really. Wetherspoons is very ordinary microwaved food, Slug & Lettuce isn't exactly gourmet but i've eaten great steaks there and their Steak Pie was definitely not a microwave job.

You can't do steaks in a microwave because of preference.

Both the W Spoons and the S&L in the town where I work serve very similar food, cooked the same (have worked in the W Spoons and two of my ex students now work in the S&L so know from first hand experience). Both microwave, both grill, both fry etc etc... Perhaps Tommy Gavin's happens to be a nice one, as with all chains some can be much better than others.

Thanks...
Well, we used the Slug & Lettuce 25% discount voucher (thank you) and had 2 starters and 2 main courses along with 4 large cokes for £22 so price-wise it was good. I felt that the portion size on the starter was larger than the mains but it was tasty.
Thank you to everyone for your tips and the 'strange town' was Salisbury! It seemed very nice even though it was dark!

No way you'd catch me paying that for some kid to put a few plates in a microwave or deep fat fryer and for the privilage of washing it down with a few glasses of what is practically an industrial solvent.Slug & Lettuce is probably slightly better than Wetherspoons though. Nothing there you couldn't make at home, so why bother being ripped off? |
