I'm currently with Vodafone (since mid December) and had a N97 Mini.

It had serious signal issues and I couldn't receive signal anywhere in my local area despite Vodafone's coverage checker stating 'high 3G indoor coverage'.

Anyway, they replaced it and sent me a new N900 ( this was the best handset that they could offer me/had in stock). Its still in the box (I haven't taken any of the packaging off it yet and hasn't been turned on or used yet) because I cannot decide if its really the handset that I would like to use for the next year....

I'm currently using an old N95 until I decide what to do. The main thing that is really putting me off is the fact that the phone is 98% landscape orientated.

Every single phone that I have ever used has obviously been a portrait phone so I am really wondering if I will be bothered/happy to use the phone in landscape all the time...?!?!?

For example, a simple thing like firing off an answer to a text message, would require both hands to accomplish as opposed to just wipping out your phone one handed, replying and putting it away...!!!

I am really undecided on the N900 - thats why its still in the box. I'm wondering if its just better to just sell it as new and just get something else with the money I get from it.

As above, I had the N97 Mini so was looking at the Nokia X6 which looks pretty similar and has a capacitive touch screen as opposed to a resistive one....

The N900 is amazing, but it is a tablet style handset and if you want one handed use you really need something more like the X6. But note capacitive screens can be fiddly for one handed use until you get used to them.

touchscreen phones are a pain for trying to use one handed. as prking said a capacative one even worse for this unless you manage to have long fingers

I love my N900 which i have had since November. Once you get around that its a mini PC with a phone feature its all go.

If Internet on the go is your thing then i do not think anything can currently beat it.

I agree, I love my N900 too and also like the fact I am not plugged into the Cupertino hype

I adore my N900 but I do think it took some getting used to.

The landscape/portrait thing is a valid concern I think. Again it took quite a bit of getting used to. Not being able to text one handed was frustrating at first, but I can honestly say after a month I am totally converted. Having a querty keyboard is the dogs wotsits really. I find texting so quick now, its absolutely not a chore, in fact I don't even think it feels like sending a text as it takes nano seconds.

I still find the actual process of ringing someone is not that great, but that could just be me.

As for the internet, nothing compares. It is fab. So easy to use, to navigate round, and the only thing I can't use is tvcatchup. Every website works and works incredibly well.

Firefox and weave sync....what a match!

Head over to http://talk.maemo.org/forumdisplay.php?f=44 and see what people are saying over there.

Hope that helps a bit.

It cannot out of the box send or receive MMS, but you can download an application to do it, it works ok. If you OK doing a bit of tweaking then you can get it working.

Another happy N900 owner here, although I had a N800 previously so am more used to landscape anyway. As has already been said, it's more a mini pc with phone capabilities, but that's part of what I love about it. For internet it does indeed kick anything else into the long grass, but it's got much more to it than that.

The last software update introduced portrait functionality to a couple of the built in applications, and I believe that further portrait capabilities are planned, can't remember where I read that though.

Fantastic screen too - one of the very few mobile devices I'm happy to watch video on for more than a 2 minute youtube clip.
