Its so good to see tvcatchup.com is about to trial HD channels, which we hope to see in the future. It has to be head and shoulders above the other IPTV providers

Apparently they are still a few weeks off launch, but are confident it will be up and running in time for the World Cup.

They are trialling it internally now and really happy with the overall results, just a few glitches to iron out.

Looks like you'll need 1.5mbps for HQ channels and 3mbps for HD (in 720p)

They are also working on a PVR service.

They've been working on this ever since the relaunch of the site following the concerns about the legality of their previous incarnation so that's, what, a year since it was first mentioned as "coming soon"? (I may be wrong on the length of time, but it does seem to have been quite a while in coming...) It has to be an application that gets installed on the user's PC and uses local disk space or it's going to get challenged, again, surely?

There are still those (Phazer!) that maintain that, even in it's current "streaming only" mode, it already breaks the rules, but I'm "neutral" on that, simply because I don't understand the rules anyway! Suffice to say that, even if it is not illegal for them to stream the broadcasters output, there must be some question about the legality of, for example, them streaming live sports events that they haven't paid the rights holders for...

the way I see it, if the channels on offer are all available for free on terrestrial and/or satellite, there is surely no real issue. what's the difference if we watch those channels on tv or online?? the issue of streaming tv is only when people stream pay channels for free or for a fee, which they then profit from, without permission

There isn't a problem for, say, BBC channels, but, if you were ITV and your official overnight viewing figures started to go down because a large enough group of people were using TVC (and seeing their online ads), rather than using ITV.com (and seeing ITVs online ads), that might make a difference. Also, if a proper TV channel has to pay extra for the rights to broadcast something online (eg sporting events), why shouldn't TVC also have to pay?

What makes you so confident of that? TVCU is using streams of the BBC's channels taken off Dsat - i.e. not the online streams the BBC makes available on its own site which blank out bits for which the BBC doesn't have online streaming rights. That compromises both the BBC and its rights partners.

I was meaning that there's no consequences from the financing POV for the BBC channels. TVC do say that a TVL is required, so they've covered themselves from that POV. However, the rights to broadcast over the net are, I agree, an issue for all the channels.

How come when I log in some of the extra channels they added as well as the HD and HQ have gone?

Dunno, just had a try and it looks like they've taken the HQ stuff of again

There were some bugs with channel info, perhaps they are ironing those out right now? They are eager to have it all running right ready for the World Cup.

As I anticipated, the commercial companies do see a problem with TVC...

well I've been using it on the regular for the last month or so, streaming through both my ps3 and laptop. the hq channels don't seem to be worth watching, they constantly rebuffer on both laptop and ps3. so for the most part i've been using standard resolution.in terms of picture quality when it is streaming ok there isnt that much of a visible improvement imo between standard and hq.

also the service in general has been pretty terrible recently, often not getting a picture ,only sound.
