Hi,

I want to upgrade the 320Gb HDD in my Humax Foxsat-HDR to a Seagate Pipeline HD 1Tb (ST31000322CS),

I want to transfer the existing recordings to the new drive.
Do I just need to install the new HDD and allow the Foxsat to format it. I understand that it uses Ext3 file system so can I just use Ext2 Installable File System For Windows to mount both drives?

Do I need to copy everything from the old drive to the new one or are there any files / directories which I should not copy?

First thing the Hdr only works with EXT3. You don't need a PC to transfer the recordings the hdr will format a new drive up to 1TB automatically. Get a esata drop in cradle, pop in the old drive and connect it by usb to the hdr (front or rear). You can copy the recording files from the SDA3 partition movie folder to the new drive if you wish, but you don't need to you can replay them straight from the drive and then use it as an archive drive.

I've no use for a drop in cradle because I already have a 750Gb 2.5" HDD in a host powered enclosure for archiving purposes so I'm going to go down the PC route to do it.

Right click on the drive in the browser and choose safely remove. The new version of the windows EXT3 driver now works anyway without unmounting the drive. (It's been known to corrupt the FS though)

as i said Graham ...this is on my list ..BUT
I am sure that you said in another helpful reply..along the lines of..

It is not possible to play back directly from the USB due to speed problems..

Did i get the wrong end of the stick? or
Is it OK when the Format is OK vizEXT3?

You didn't used to be able to play back HD encrypted stuff from a USB stick, but since the latest software update you can.

Just to update you - the upgrade went smoothly and everything is working perfectly! All my recordings and schedule transferred to the new HDD.

Do you have any recommendations for transferring .ts files from the Foxsat to .mpg? I have a Pinnacle Showcenter digital media player which I want to use to play archived recordings.

I've tried using VideoRedo which alot of people use but I had problems with it only converting half the recording. I've tried a few other programs like TStoMPEG2 which didn't work.

Any suggestions please?

I use videoredo plus with no problems. The free media player VLCplayer will play back the .TS files without conversion
