Will Young's "Leave Right Now" is American Idol's new Exit Song
gertrude

American Idol are going to use Will's song Leave Right Now, as their new 'exit' song

Will's one artist who's never tried to break it in the US, but I'm sure this will go down well there, without him even trying, as it was such a mammoth hit here in 2003. Great video too

Wow, this could make it a huge hit in America then. Good luck to him!

I doubt it will make a huge star in the US. But such a good choice for an exit song.

He has. They tried to break him in the US after the first series of American Idol when they had him singing with Kelly. Unfortunately, the American public didn't really take to him. Many were saying that they weren't happy with him trying to outdo Kelly. All Will did was sing the best that he could in the moment, in no way did he try to outsing her or overpower her. I think it had more to do with the fact that Will was already out by then.

It's a strange sudden choice for exit song on American Idol but I'm pleased for him. It wouldn't surprise me if in view of ...... errrrmmmm .......... recent events involving American Idol, and despite homophobia still being prevalent in the US, they feel the time is right to give Will another push in America. I hope it works out for him this time. He's too good a singer to go ignored in what is an obvious market for his voice and genre.

Yes, but apart from his AI appearance 8 years ago, I don't think any of his songs have been released there, so he hasn't really tried to break into their market.

Doesn't the exit song get performed on the final? If he did perform it, it would become an overnight hit.

America didn't know much about or even care, about our Pop Idol winner back in 2002, apart from Simon Cowell being a judge on it. I don't think Will being gay had anything to do with them not taking to him, they just didn't like him being there on final night. They were just very much into something new and exciting of their own, it was the very first American Idol final and they just didn't want him there. He's never tried to break America and Will's never released any music in the states, but he has quite a lot of fans in America.

I remember Will saying that the first time he got recognised in America was for 'Mrs Henderson Presents'

Whether 'Leave Right Now' captures America's attention or not - it's still an honour that they have chosen his song.

I don't know if he's tried to break America or not but when he went to perform on AI Simon Cowell was telling everyone that the wrong one won! That was bound to influence the American audience. Especially as Cowell was their new golden boy at the time.

I don't know if Will want's to make it in the US, maybe he's had a change of heart, but I do know that he wasn't so keen a few years back. In his words, he'd lose even more control of his work than he already had, Having strived to get that control back, to be able to do the odd bit of acting, to even get agreement from his label for his niche product, the forthcoming dance album, I can't see him wanting to give all that up for maybe just a couple of hits across the pond, but maybe he does.

Or maybe, he doesn't even know they've chosen his song for the show.

I should think he does know Marguerite

Well it's a great song. Not sure the sentiment is quite right for this show though It's a bit 'stuff you I'm leaving' rather than, 'well done, hard luck, and here's your best bits'.

Will hasn't been bothered about making it in the states since they tried to make demands on how he should act and look. If they take him on his own terms, he may decide to go over.

My favourite song of all time and Will Young is not my favourite artist

He could have a hit on his hands if he does some promo for it as well, having your song played to 30million each week is great publicity.

with him having his greatest hits out, there's no reason for him not try and gain at least a 'cult' following over there

It will be interesting to see if he does take off over there, although I selfishly would rather he stayed successful on this side of the pond only Particularly if it means we get less of the live concerts!!

Interesting choice. Curious as to how America is going to react to it.
It would be great for him to perform it on the final.

I think he already has a cult following from what we read on Twitter!

It will certainly give the US an awareness of who he is,if nothing else. If he did get a chance to sing in the Final that would be fantastic for him, though I don't really think it's the best song to show off his vocals.

I much prefer him singing it live, this version is a recent one from Cheryl Coles Night In show at Christmas.

I agree Getty - love it live. Not sure how it's going to go over in the states though, it ain't R&B or big ballad so who knows!

If there is anyone from the US on here can you please point out to the powers that be on MTV that Will has a VERY successful career in the UK and has had four multi-platinum albums and one on-going at the moment. He has won two Brit awards, was voted Britain's favourite singer for two years running and he is also a successful song-writer, actor and has presented documentaries on diverse subjects such as runaway teenagers and endangered species.

He has appeared in Question Time and spoke at the Oxford Union a couple of years ago.

He also has the fastest-selling debut single of all time!
