Does anyone know of a device that I can plug into a scart/rf socket on my tv that will connect to my wifi network so that I can view my downloaded programmes without having to burn to cd dvd?

thanks

I doubt this would exist, to be honest. If it did the quality would be somewhat jumpy. You would probably have to get a video sender and a TV card.

I don't know if they exist but the quality would be fine. 11Mbits/sec is more than most digital TV channels.

Thanks

I have a g network so 54mb/s - a 350 mb 45 minute episode of the star trek (for instance) in full screen should be able to play across no problem, might require the box to have it's own internal memory but still shouldnt be a problem.

Guess I will have to make one myself

Take one cheap pc, add a wifi card and make sure it has tv-out and radio keyboard/mouse/remote control plug into tv and this should do the trick, just like using another pc on your tv instead of a moniter I guess.

Add DVD player to machine and you can watch DVD's and play PC games (networked).

Then maybe use Window Media Centre for a nicer interface (more suitable to TV) and should be more user friendly although would require a higher powered machine.

Wonder what the min spec would be?

Something like this at £116 should do the job - then add a £30 wifi card and i should be away

That should be okay. If no one is using main PC you could just get a TV out card and connect it to a video sender, then get a remote to control Windows (try eBay) which would be sent to the PC via the sender.

Your way would allow someone to use the main PC at the same time, though.

cybersquatter - yes, but it is unlikely to actually work at 11mbs, depending on how many walls it goes through. 54mb/s would be okay.

Looks like Hauppauge were reading this thread...

That model will only work with wired networks although you could connect it to an access point, of course - a model with integrated wireless is on the way later in the year apparently.

Linksys do a DVD player with a built-in 802.11g and plays DivX as well. Supposed to be on sale now, but probably across the pond only for the moment:

Pinnacle Show Center is being advertised a lot in the PC Mags at present

Quote:
“Get out from in front of your PC!
Would you like to enjoy the hundreds of MP3s, playlists, photos, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 videos that are on your hard drive in the comfort of your living room? Then step up to Pinnacle ShowCenter. ShowCenter lets you organize your personal and downloaded movies, music and photos on your PC, then enjoy them on your home entertainment center. Play all of the most popular media formats on your television and home stereo with awesome picture quality and audio fidelity. ShowCenter is the easiest way to enjoy all of your digital media in the most comfortable room in your house. ”

, again it's Ethernet....

Shame none of the devices on the market are able to just stream the data from shared folders so you could have all your files on a linux server, or an NAS device (in the current PC Plus there is a harddrive that you plug into the ethernet connection - this would be the ideal device to store this stuff on, and no desktop PC needs to be on either )

Maybe this will suit you

Personally I'm waiting for a wi-fi video sender. I'm looking for a box to connect 2 pieces of video kit, not my PC and TV.

I currently use an analogue sender to connect my sky box to 2 extra tvs around the house. It's great but unfortunately when my Bluetooth network is on (same 2.4GHz freq as wi-fi) it causes interfence (as do microwave ovens - but less frequently).

So why not work with the tech rather than fight it - send video over the same wi-fi network that would otherwise cause interference.

I can't see it being cheap in the short term. Anyone know if they exist?

Another solution for me would be switching to a Wi-Fi 'a' flavour (rather than 'b' or 'g') network, which uses 5GHz. But this kit is still a good deal more expensive than standard wi-fi

I use the Pinnacle ShowCentre wirelessly. It comes with a 802.11b PCMCIA wireless card, which is fine for streaming MP3's VCD & SVCD's

I've hooked mine up to a 54G wireless bridge, now it steams everything, MPG, VOBs etc.. without any problems.

It's the dogs doodahs !
