It makes a difference. It's not the be all and end all, but it does make a difference. The nearer you are to the end, the more likely people are to remember you when voting comes. And at the start of the show there are almost always fewer viewers than at the end.
If it's a particularly memorable routine (like Kieron's opening routine last week) it probably matters less, because that sticks in peoples mind anyway. But still going on later is an advantage. It's a subtle way that producers can give their favourites a boost, and make it more likely that certain people get voted off (like how in the X Factor this year, Joe was almost always put on right at the end, while someone like Lloyd was never given a slot in the latter half of the line-up ever). It's a bit less blatent than a VT, but it can still be a useful manipulation tool for them sometimes.
