Of course you have a point but it would still have been pretty easy to give Maria a duffer this year. I don't think anyone would have minded if she'd been given Bobby Davro or Dr Hilary and they'd turned out to be decent - in fact she'd have deserved a lot of respect! However, she didn't - she got Gary Lucy who (iirc) had done some roller skating and was one of only three males under thirty. Okay, he might have turned out to be cr*p but I think any pro given a choice between Gary and either of the others mentioned earlier might just go for Gary...
