In that case, watch Torvill & Dean's Ice Adventures - the Winter Games section, which is a total take off of winter sports competitions; they used the same music in the bobsleigh section of that. This was with professional skaters, so you can see the full potential of that routine.

Um .. I actually really liked the routine - it gave Gary something different to do, he was less 'magnolia paintish'

That said, it was too fast and so it looked rushed and a bit unpolished. He is still the best of the male skaters - he generally does more difficult lifts than the other two - infact he managed to correct an error mid-lift last night. We'll have to agree to disagree won't we

Gary and Maria's routine was awful. Really cringe-worthy.

I didn't like it at all and I wondered whether they had given Gary and Maria the routine that Sharron Davies had ditched the week before....after all the winter Olympics were practically over by last weekend!

It was IMHO a good idea not executed well, perhaps because Gary seems to be quite a fluid skater naturally, whereas this routine called for a lot of stopping and starting and chopping and changing. I suspect that was why he didn't convey it with full conviction either i.e. that he was having to concentrate harder on his skating, so it did challenge him in that way but cost him something on performance.

It was bad !!! Such a strange routine, and Gary stumbled a few times. Not my favorite....by a long shot

If Chris hadn't explained all the different things they were doing before they did the routine I wouldn't have had a clue what it was all about....not one of T&D's finest pieces of Choreography I think!

I loved the concept of the routine and I wonder if maybe the idea was to give Gary a routine he could act his way through rather than dance?
I actually thought he did it ok, but I did think that maybe the time allowed for the routine was a little bit too short for the amount they tried to pack in, as a result the changes from one theme to another were a little bit rushed. Overall, for me, a good idea which very nearly worked very well. I think it is fair to say Chris Fountain may have pulled it off slightly better, partly because his skating style was very much athletic rather than graceful and it would have suited that style very well. Gary is a good skater, but his performances are slightly less athletic than Chris'. I think Ray's talents may have been wasted on it, one of his strengths was that he could link skating talent to musical interpretation so well and there wasn't much need for that in this routine. |
