I've just brought two Virgin Nokia 1661's. I put in my existing VM SIM cards but the new phones won't read them, you just get the "insert SIM card" message.

But when I looked at the SIM cards that were supplied with the new phones, they look different.

The chip is smaller and oblong shaped, are there different types?

There are different types of SIM, however they are generally interchangeable.
Some old phones are not compatible with a 3G USIM and very very occasionally a particular model phone will not work with SIM cards from a particular network without a firmware upgrade.
This obviously isn't the case with your situation, so the most likely explanation is that the cards are incorrectly inserted.
