All Cat lovers would enjoy the delightful book by Paul Gallico.

essentially, it looks at human-cat relationships, but from the Cats perspective. It's very funny and most of it rings very true indeed.

So it's not just a female cat thing then...

So, do we think that they ARE actual silent mewos, or is the cat meowing at a very high frequency?

Does anyone have any idea why my tomcat used to make such a racket when he was stray and miaowing for food, but has gone pretty much silent since I caught him,had him neutered and took him in?His miaow was heartrending ,impossible to ignore and now it's gone...

Nothing to do with your cat but the frequencies you describe about people losing the ability to hear over those frequency ranges. That covers the entire spectrum of human hearing so losing over those frequencies would make somebody totally deaf. That's what struck me reading the post.

I am always in a state of confusion with regards to our cats and their meows and I may be the only one who thinks this but when big cats (not lions) but those moggies that look like two in one for their size meow they should sound really tough and butch. In fact the rule is often the other way round with little cats sounding like they are screaming at us and getting fed quickly to shut them up whilst the large ones are, well just pussies with little noises that make them a bit soppy. There are no rules it seems when it comes to size and their sound, yet I keep on getting cought out, I love cats.

hat's it exactly!
I ad somewhere that cats adjut the volume to match his human. Try it - when cat is sitting miaowing at you, talk back, lower and lower in tone, and he will do the same until finally you get to silent miaow.

I always thought ours was the only one that did silent meows. Its literally just open mouth but with the doe eyes to accompany it.

We always assumed it was because she had a pretty traumatic kittenhood before we got her and she was afraid of meowing too loudly other she would be scolded (me personally I would love to hear her meow)

Our old cat (male) was particularly vocal and would have different meows for food, going out, affection etc but this little one is so quiet that we thought she was either petrifided of the consequences of making a noise or she had something wrong with her vocal chords. Vet has checked her out when she was having her teeth done and there is nothing wrong with the latter so can only assume she is just a silent meower (or just got into the habit) as she is not as neurotic and scared as she was when we got her. or we just can't hear her!

I obtained those details from this thread:

Please see post 22 onwards.

Have I misunderstood what they were telling me?
