LOL

Funnily enough when we were there a couple of weeks ago I saw someone doing that! It wasnt you was it?

In Australia most fish and chip shops also are a fish monger so you can choose the type of fish you want you also have the option to have it grilled instead of battered which is much nicer.

Don't know what it is but am guessing they change the oil more frequently too as the chips are far nice.

Oh and its not something im romantisizing in my memory everytime I go back home i eat tons of fish and chips or calimari - over here rarely go and everytime its a disappointment. To be fair have never liked battered fish though.”

You've obviously never been to Ernie Becketts or Steel's Corner House in Cleethorpes or the Magpie Cafe in Whitby then...

I can't speak for other restaurants in that chain, but that one is great. Fresh fish, caught daily, lots of options on how it is cooked. Good chips. Highly recommended!

As for the main discussion point on this thread.

I adore eating at Mcdonalds, Subway, KFC and I love fish and chips from my local shop.

If other people don't like it, or think its unhealthy, then my suggestion is.....Don't go there!

We eat a balanced diet in our house with a mix of really good for us and really bad for us stuff. When we go to Mcdonalds, my 2 year old has a happy meal WITH FRIES (not carrot sticks, he eats plenty of carrot sticks at home). Its a treat. Its not as if we eat there every day. And they do offer healthier options if you want them.

I agree you may not get the healthiest food in these fast food chains - but no-one is forcing you to eat there. Its not like its the law that you must have a greasy burger every once in a while.

A little bit of what you fancy does you good. ”

Applauds your post.

Doubt it, only just got back in the county. Give it a go... when you see how much grease comes off you will be glad you did!

Nah. I understand the sentiment but a bit of grease never bothered me personally.

There's a few reasons. I can't make a chinese at home that tastes just as good as a takeaway and I usually get takeout when I either have no time to cook or just don't want to spend any time in the kitchen.

I don't buy it often so it's not a huge concern for me.

Thats twice on this thread (maybe more Ive not read to the end) that people have put Greggs at the lowest. Surely like Subway it depends on what you have?

I think Greggs do a 'tuna crunch' sarnie on luvly thick soft bread. It's YUM.

I've never had a Subway in my life but I've been to all teh other places!!!

I may have had a sausage roll from Greggs this year but as I am on a health kick I haven't had any other fast food!!

The occasional KFC meal is actually something of a treat for me I must say - usaully when I have a stonking hangover!!

Oh, agreement from me there! Nothing like a bit of KFC stodge to cure the ills of alcohol.

A bit harsh! I thought the post was very polite by LQS and no harm meant. I've never thought of her as a "self appointed forum leader".

You're right, of course, BW. However, I think that like me, LQS has bumped into Mantey on a few threads already and noticed that all they do is berate others for their food choices. By all means say if something is not to your taste, but don't join the forum simply to lecture others that all pre-prepared food is evil and that we should take packing up rather than enjoying a pub meal with a loved one, etc, etc.

This is a discussion forum (and my favourite part of DS because of posters' shared enthusiasm) not one poster's personal soap box.

Agreed!

LQS can "speak for me" all day long as I agree 100% with her. This here forum is full of lovely people and we rarely have any negativity. It's like a little DS safe haven

How odd that the usual postive and happy place that is the food forum has had not one but two very negative threads of late

I know, I don't like it either!
This is a safe haven usually!

Subway should definitely be on the list, it's completely processed shite.

Have you considered that most people cannot make Chinese food as well as takeaways?

Very much so, the same as all of the other places. I was going to say BK but there really aren't that many of them around here and I haven't been to one for years so it'd be a bit unfair. It was the pies etc that swung it for me. Not that I wouldn't eat one once in a while... in moderation is the key

Greggs do have some nice sandwiches yes, but I suspect that they really aren't any less processed / salty / fatty than a lot of KFC/McD output anyway.

couldn't eat a mc donalds if you paid me, i used til like them when i was younger but after watching a television programme on what they put in the food it put me right off it

Love KFC, Wicked Zinger Tower meal is my fave with a cobbet and pepsi max.
Mcdonalds is a once in a blue moon affair. Qaurter pounder with cheese and Sausage and egg muffins are the best. Big Macs are awfull and so not Big.
Burger King I would rather have over a Mcdonalds anyday. All of there burgers are just very yummy and the crispy coated fries are fab.
Subway I do like now and then. A foot long meatball marinara with sweetcorn, tomato, lettuce, onion, jalapeno pepper and sweet onion sauce goes down very nicely indeed.

Sigh, do you never have any treats?

Let me buy you a Big Mac, no pickle.

Well sandwiches can be as unhealthy as a your traditionally know junk grub.

Subway has been proved to be salt heavy.

I would put Subway firmly in the Junk category, just like petrol station sandwiches, but as always it won't hurt you now and again.

You only live once, enjoy.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that if you don't eat junk food you don't have any 'treats'

IMO the best food and a treat can be the healthiest home cooked cuisine. Other times a salt laden Carbohydrate stodgefest can be a treat.

I would NEVER class anything from McDonalds as a 'treat', but that's just me. Each to their own.

What I do find fascinating is how concerned some of us are with the diet's of others.

As long as we're eating OK then that's all that matters isn't it?
