How do fascination records survive?!
Given the performance of their latest single from their list of acts - 'Remember December' - I have to wonder how on earth they are still in business.
They've only got a single money making act at the moment, how on earth haven't they collapsed? ![]() Apart from that one act doing well, they have the following: Demi Lovato - A US "teenstar" who's last single charted at #80 and Album at #100+ Girls Can't Catch - A 3 piece girl group who've had one top 20 hit (just) from an as yet unreleased album which will probably never see the light of day Jonas Brothers - Last single peaked at #66. Album peaked at #9 but spent only 3 weeks in the top 75, never to be seen again Miley Cyrus - another US popstar who's had a couple of top 20 hits but not much more Sophie Ellis-Bextor - hasn't released an album for nearly 3 years and last had a top 10 hit back in Feb 2007 Bananarama - 2009 album charted at #87, with the lead single at #44 The Saturdays - Doing probably the best out of all these lsited, but still not that impressive. Six top 10 singles but a flop second album struggling to go gold despite lots of promotion. Girls Aloud - Successful, but not together at the moment so not doing much for them. And what's more, they keep pumping money into these flop acts! Anyone know their secret? It seems like it's a business with an endless pot of cash to spend on british and US pop! |

Although sales of Miley Cyrus/Demi Lovato/Jonas Brothers are probably more sporadic, they may dwindle around the bottom of the top 100 for a while and, although they don't peak highly in the charts, the sales add up.
All of there acts are often found on compilation CDs too (Now..., Pop Party etc) and that is a very lucrative market. |

That's a good question, depends on how much money they spend on these acts really. I'm sure they just send a work experience dude out to clubs and bars to catch female singers in a net for their girlbands.
Joking ofc :P |

They do well because they're just a sub label. It's just the section of the main label that releases it's more pop based acts.
It's much like Arista/LaFace or Universal/Island. All the money still goes to Polydor. |

Miley had a sell out tour last year, i guess that's made them some money. But i see your point. Also, Mini viva have barely been earning them money either.

The Sats singles are making up for their lack of album sales. Their management must know that it's not The Sats fault that the Wordshaker era has flopped. The lead single was leaked in August, and the 5th single from album #1 only left the top 100 in July! It's a joke how badly they've been screwed around yet they still got Ego to over 210K (and still in top 40).
Plus their "stage" tour last year sold out. |

Well with Demi, Miley and Jonas, I think they're more just licensing deals, it's not like they've put money into the production of the album.
I think their deals with Girls Aloud & The Saturdays are 360 type deals. Or at least encompass profits from the tour. |

Cheryl Cole's with Fascination isn't she? She must be earning them a fortune.
But I kind of like the fact that they stick with people like Mini Viva, Sophie E-B and Girls Can't Catch, even though they must be losing them money. Any other label would have dropped them by now. They seem to actually care about making good pop music, rather than focusing purely on profits. |

I think they sign these pop acts now with contracts that include merchandise, magazine deals, tours etc. and not just simply on album sales. This is what i think anyway!

So basically most of any record labels promotion will be biased towards acts with these 360 type deal because that will earn them their biggest return. That explains a lot. Thank-you

It explains why the charts are littered with dross. Why spend money promoting a really good act when you only get say 50% of their CD sales earnings and nothing else )I'm just making these %'s up) and if you promote your crap 360 act you will get 85% of everything (hair product advertising / clothes modeling/designing, Nuts and Maxim etc photo shoots and co-writers royalties). It explains the rise of the so called co-writer who has never written a song in their lives and it also explains why male acts are thinner on the ground - not so many lucrative markets to exploit. This is fascinating it would be so good to know who had and who didn't have one of these deals.

I dont think its even a 'proper' record label. It's just a logo slapped onto Polydor releases. And Polydor is just the current leading pop label for Universal Music, similarly to how Virgin was for EMI in the late 1990s...
I'll get my anorak..

I would imagine that Fascination don't have many overheads in terms of employees. It's probably a small team.
