I'm curious to know people's opinions on pigeon. I've never had it before but my favourite local restaurant has just added it to their menu (Seared pigeon breasts on toasts with a bramble sauce) and I'm very, very tempted by it.

I'll almost certainly give it a try next time I go (unless something else on the specials grabs my attention)

It is absolutely gorgeous. But it was too gamey for my wife, i loved it. I had a thread last week about it but it went down like a rat in the sewer.

Yeah, I assumed it would be gamey ... but I love game so that's all good!

I love that "gamey" taste, good they serve it with bramble sauce, maybe your missus would like it with a sharper sauce, less sweet, though game is kind of Autumnal so it does go with blackberries e.t.c

Twice - enjoyed the taste both times but on the second occasion the presentation included the legs grilled and crossed on top for decoration and was a bit off-putting.

Seared, off course will mean very rare inside, but you don't want it overcooked either.

They hang it too long in the UK, that's why it's so gamey.

Its on the menu where i work, cant say we sell that much of it really but the people who do have it always say " wow u have pigeon " so i guess its not seen that often...... i have never tried it ...... i'm not sure i fancy trying it either

Yeah, I did wonder why I so rarely see it and assume it's because people feel a bit ... squeamish about eating it, as they see it as vermin.

Only had it a couple of times and loved it on both occasions. Not the sort of thing I'd attempt at home, and you don't often see it on menus unfortunately.

I presume it's wood pigeon they're serving though and not the city centre rats with wings type?

No one would eat the city centre type.
It makes me laugh when people claim they are really clean, they are always grooming you know.

I can see 2 from where I happen to be posting, sleeping in their own sh**.

When I was I boy Dewhurst the butchers in Newport Pagnell sold roast pigeon breasts.

So when my Grandfather visited he would take me down the street and we would walk along eating a lovely warm pigeon breast each.

Yummy.

I haven't seen the like for over forty years.

One would think ...

Do people see the distinction? I'd understand if it's unpopular because people think they've been taken from trafalgar square to the table.

I think many who post here would know there is a difference, but I'm not so sure some of the masses would. I wouldn't have known myself at some point, just can't remember the time or age I realised we ate other birds other than chicken or turkey...

Pheasant is a big favourite of mine. My grandpa used to shoot them and we'd have them very regularly, now it's more of a rarity - but very special.

Ostrich is possibly the strangest bird I've eaten. It's very meaty though.

We have pheasant running around outside our house some days - there's loads of mature trees and vegetation. Beautiful birds. I haven't had the pleasure of tasting them... will do though, one day...

Same here, i've not had ostrich so it sound nice.

Swordfish or kangaroo is probably the strangest animal i've eaten for the UK. Though neither in the uk.
