Was it sterilized milk?

This country.”

That's what I was trying to find out, why is the gaining ground?
I used to deliver the damn stuff, very little of this skimmed nonsense then.
Only for grannies and very odd eccentric sorts.
I don't remember anyone drinking it that I knew as a child either.
Doesn't taste like milk either, unless you like your milk watered down.

I go to a Cafe or Canteen and after filling up on fried food, I have to endure this weak willed nonsense.
It's like going into the Chippy buying 2 portions of chips for yourself then asking for Diet Coke (other brands of gassy pop are available), what's the point?

Right, can't remember the types that correspond with the colours, but there was Gold, Silver, Red and Green/Green with the crimped beer style bottle top IIRC.
I've just realised why I always shake Milk before using it now, must be to mix up the fat/cream.

Ahh that stuff, the name is very fitting, Milk that's firing blanks.
What's that all about, Milk's pasteurised anyway to get rid of bacteria or some such anyway.
Unless you're going to source, I guess.

I was only allowed skimmed milk for most of my childhood in the 70's due to health reasons..I either had to have marvel of the pale blue stuff the milkman used to bring....luckily skimmed milk has moved on a bit since then and now all other milk tastes odd for me, like its gone off...

Pasteurising milk doesn't 'get rid' of all bacteria, just the nasty ones.

Sterilising milk is done at a higher temperature for a longer time than 'pasteurising' & should 'get rid' of all bacteria - hence sterilised milk can be stored (while unopened) at ambient temperature - i.e. doesn't need to go in a fridge until you open it.

The 'modern' equivalent to sterilised milk is 'UHT' milk in Tetrapak containers.

Personally I don't like either, the UHT doesn't have so much of the 'caramel' taste as the bull bottle, but is still noticeable.

Most dairies, these days, completely separate the milk into skimmed & cream, then re-combine or 'standardise' the streams to the required fat content for their pasteurised products.

Cravendale has an extra filtration process which extends the shelf life above that of 'usual' pasteurised milk - and because it doesn't involve heat treatment, it doesn't effect the taste

I occasionally not only like full fat milk but I sometimes like to get Jersey milk which is even more extra thick and creamy. Yum! Not saying it is good for you per se compared with semi skimmed, which I think is the most nutritionally balanced but occasionally I get a craving for it.

I remember on some American show there was an overweight couple who only ever used half and half (half milk, half cream) on their cereal!

I don't like semi-skimmed gives me the trots, plus it's like milk 'lite' doesn't taste right.
I can't be the only person who doesn't like Semi-Skimmed can I?”

Sorry Prince M but I drink skimmed.

I occasionally stay with friends who live next door to a dairy farmer - whenever I pop in for a cuppa my tea is served with genuine full fat milk - I see globules of cream rising to the top; I can't believe I ever drank that stuff.
