You can buy it SIM free from the usual places (Nokia, Play, Expansys etc) or with a contract from Carphone Warehouse or Nokia.

I got mine from www.nokiaretail.co.uk - I would not go to any division of the Carphone Warehouse (including mobiles.co.uk and various other names) as their current terms and conditions state you cannot switch down your tariff at any point during the minimum term you took the phone for. So let's say you pay £30 per month on a 2 year contract but want to switch down after month 9 (which Vodafone, one of the phone's supporters allows you to do), CPW and their subsidiaries will be asking for part or all of the handset cost back.

Nokia Retail will allow switching of tariffs so long as the network will permit it.

I got my N900 yesterday from carphonewarehouse, on Vodafone as this has the best coverage where I live and want to use the device, it is a great phone but you need to get the extras repository to get more apps.
