the original iPhone is no longer sold by any operators, only available ones are an 8gb 3g or the 3Gs in 16gb or 32gb versions.

if it is the 8gb 3G you mean then the only difference day to day would be the speed it runs at, the 3Gs has more ram and a faster processor.

Only other different would be the compass aswell, this is mainly only useful for apps that take advantage of it like apps with augmented reality view... example of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fZk0HaIs4s

day to day use I cant think of anythin else a new user would miss from having the 3G over the 3Gs

The 3gs can be 2x faster, although I dont exactly find my 3g slow. There is no video camera on the 3g installed, however there is an app called ivideocamera that will let you record video (very limited compared to 3gs but completely fine just for shooting small video clips). The 3gs also has something called voice control, i'm guessing this allows you to say a command for the phone to perform, not something I would use anyway. The only other thing is the memory, the 3gs has at least double the amount of storage memory of the standard iphone 3g.
