I have recently become vegetarian (albeit for Lent at the moment, but i am hoping to carry it on) and i have come across the question as to whether or not Vegetarians should eat fish or not... As a lot of people seem to think its okay, is this the case with the majority of Veggies out there?
It just seems a bit wrong in my opinion to not eat other animals but not mind eating fish?

Also where do you draw the line as should vegetarians also not buy any leather goods (ie shoes or bags?)?

A vegetarian does not eat fish. Someone that eats fish but not meat is a pescatarian (I think). Someone who has no animal products whatsoever is a vegan.

If you still eat fish, you are NOT a vegetarian.

People have various reasons for giving up meat - not always cruelty issues.

Draw your own line. If you're happier following a largely vegetarian diet with some fish, then go ahead. There aren't any rules. You won't be drummed out of the club because there isn't one.

I know vegetarians who do not use any animal products. They also do not take anything from nature unless it is grown or plucked from a tree. They avoid dairy, seafood and honey. They have shoes made from hemp. The shoes and bags look very stylish.

I also know vegetarians who begin to subdivide themselves into groups.Ovo lacto, demi etc. These use dairy products and eggs and honey and demis tend to eat fish and the occasional bit of chicken.

Vegan purists will often attack the subdividers as they feel that they are not truly vegetarian but cherry pickers.

It does become religious to what is best for the world and the environment.

As for me,I have meat days, fruit days and vegetarian days. Difficult to catagorise although some would class it as not fully committed/lazy.

Vegetarians don't eat fish.

If a vegetarian is so because of ethical reasons, I'd find it a bit strange if they wore leather.

I am, and I don't.

I am a vegetarian but I do wear leather shoes. Although there are some very good shoes made without any animal products I have found they don't fit my feet as well as Clarks shoes. I've tried other brands that are made of leather and they don't fit either. So if only Clarks made vegetarian shoes I would have no ethical dilemmas.

**jumps in quickly**

As has been said, vegetarians do not eat the flesh of another animal.

**jumps out quickly before the 'meat is murder' crew invade**

Its important to understand the definition of a vegetarian.

A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat, fish, poultry or any slaughterhouse by-product such as gelatine.

Therefore someone who eats fish can not be classed as vegi however, there is no restriction on the wearing of leather since it is not eaten.

Thanks for the clarification everyone, it's just because most of the people i know who are Vegetarians do eat fish and when i gave up meat for Lent i accidently bought a prawn sandwich which i felt really bad about but a lady at work said 'well that doesnt matter, vegetarians eat fish anyway' - which i think is really wrong if you are veggie for ethical reasons because why should the meat of a chicken which has been slaughtered for your food be any different to a fish?? I don't get it!

OP just do what is comfortable for you.

Some vegetarians do things gradually. Cut out meat, but still eat fish, then cut out fish later.

Vegans do not take any animal products atall, ie milk, cheese, eggs butter etc.

There are loads of great veggie cookbooks out there and restaurants offer tasty choices (usually)

A bit different to 25 years ago anyway !

Eat what you want or don't want. Nobody cares. We'll all be dead eventually anyway.

Then they are not vegetarians.

Edit for clarification.

Its like saying "I'm not a murderer - I gave up killing children and only kill adults now...."

It isn't about a club, it's about what 'vegetarian' means. And a vegetarian does not eat fish. Simple really.

One can still, of course, not eat 'meat' but choose to eat fish, and that's all dandy, but they aren't a vegetarian.

I don't know veggies who eat fish either, since they don't exist, but as I said earlier, there are people who follow largely vegetarian diets but eat some fish.

Depends if you're in it for the ethics or not. I eat neither but I don't freak about what type of stock has gone in a soup at a restaurant. Yet the easiest way for me to describe my diet to those who need to know (dinner party hosts and the like) is vegetarian.

I kill spiders too.

ETA: Post #16. After 23 years avoiding both meat and fish, that's me told, innit.

You can go fox hunting if you want and still be vegi - just so long as you don't eat it

I don't know any vegetarians who eat fish as well. I'm veggie for religious reasons (I'm not religious now but have no desire for meat because I've never eaten meat since age 0) and if you eat fish you're not vegetarian. Vegetarians don't eat meat.

I wear leather (which has nothing to do with being a vegetarian) and eat eggs so I'm a ovo-vegetarian I think.

Heh. Did you see that comic on telly a while back: "Have you ever got halfway through a horse and said, you know, I'm not as hungry as I thought I was."

Vegetarians don't eat fish. They don't eat the flesh of any living creature or any bi-product from the flesh of a living creature - such as gelatine (in jellies and some yoghurts) or rennet (in cheese), lard and suet.
However they can eat eggs, butter, cream, vegetarian cheese and drink milk.

The vegetarians who also don't eat anything produced by an animal - such as eggs, milk and other dairy products are called Vegans. They generally don't wear wool either.

I would imagine that most vegetarians, vegans and animal lovers in general would not wear fur and would try to avoid leather. Unfortunately there isn't nearly so much choice of style in non-leather shoes and handbags as there is in leather ones.

Vegetarians, by definition, don't eat fish.

Pescetarians, however, do eat fish.
