Black cats and static
B3aten
05-03-2010
Hi,

We have a black cat and when the air is dry, he keeps getting static discharges when I stroke him, which is putting him off being cuddled. We also have two tabbies and this doesn't happen with them. It's something to do with black fur, as a black and white cat we had when I was a child had the same problem as I remember zapping his nose on purpose.

Anyone else heard about this one before? I've tried de-ionising him with an LP de-ioniser, but to no avail...

Texture of fur NOT colour, sorry

Does he drag his paws across the carpet?

The tabbies coats don't seem to be so dry.

You've got me thinking - The ground floor is laminated flooring with a single rug in the living room - it might be worth treating that with a conductive spray...

Cheers!

When any one of my cats sleeps on top of the tv we can get a static shock if we touch them. One of them Jenny likes to sniff your hand first as if we have never met before and pannic sets in when there is a crackling sound and both of us gets a shock. It seems worse on cold days and I have just come in from being outside. The cause, no idea!

I've had five black cats and never had a problem. However I have a bengal girl who gives me static shocks all the time. She has a very short fine coat more of a pelt than fur. I think its more to do with the length and texture of the fur.

My black cat is always doing this! I think it's from what she's been lying on though, not her colour.

i get these all the time from our black and white cat, but i get them from people aswell so i doubt its his fur colour. he has a very fluffy but short coat, which is dry too.

Absolutely...

OP - It will be far more noticable on days of low humidity and it will probably be worth checking the aior in the house isn't too dry too.

Flooring and your own clothes, footwear etc will make a big difference too.

Thnx. I still have one left (Twins, we got them in september from the Cat Protection Agency.) which is good. Why does this happen with the static shocks? And I didn't think it was black cats, because my cat was white with a few small brown patches, and the other is a black cat (like Jess the Cat) and doesn't give me any. The Other 2 Were Ginger and Grey, and I didn't get any from them

(The White one spent all her time on a bed/rug/her bed, the rest didn't?)

I've had static shocks from my black cat several times, but not from the tabby cat.
