Hi!

My Mum and Dad are always going on about butterscotch tart which they had whilst at school. My Mum has tried to replicate the recipe but to no avail. So, I'm asking if any of you have a recipe that you think is the same? I thought it might be nice to make it and take it round on Mother's Day

Mrs Elway and I replicated it to perfection once. Though we didn't have the 'shaving cream' that went with it that we got at school.

I'll try and find the recipe and post it for you.

The 'shaving cream' that went with school butterscotch tart was dream topping.

It's still made by Bird's http://www.britstore.co.uk/photos/Bi...opping_36g.jpg

I've never had butterscotch tart like the gorgoeus one I had in primary school.

I can remember it now... sweetmeal pastry... rich creamy butterscotch.... with chocolate flakes scattered on the top... whipped dream topping on the side...

I am salivating now.

Is butterscotch tart the same as gypsy tart? I used to love that at school!

If so, here is a recipe I found but have never yet tried! http://thefoody.com/pudding/gypsytart.html

I have googled it, but there were many different variations. I asked here, mainly because I thought people might remember it, and have a recipe thats as close as possible (because it would mean a lot to my Mum).

If you're anywhere near nottingham then I can get you some genuine school ones - I work in a school and they still make them. They are just as nice as I remember but I try not to give in to temptation too often!!

Saw the same question a couple of years ago on another forum and copied the answer - can't remember where it came from.
Think they said you must 1/4 the quantities as this is for a school tray - about 24 portions.
First you need a pastry or short bread shell......and...
170 g Marg ........................42gms
120 g sugar ........................30gms
100 g flour ..........................25gms
430 ml milk........................110mls
230 g syrup.......................55gms
1) Melt marg and sugar in a double saucepan
2) Whisk in flour and milk until thick
3) Beat in syrup
4) Cool
5) Pour into either a pastry shell or even better a short crust shell.
This recipe will need to be reduced in quantity, unless you want to feed the street!!!!

Sounds good. The pastry case needs to be baked blind is all I would add.
