As has been said Chris and Karen have been friends for 30 years. Hardly surprising if Karen is being supportive.

Both of them are living away from home. They can either both sit in by themselves with a ready meal for one of an evening, or spend time with someone they get on well with. Karen is probably getting a lot of satisfaction out of mothering Chris a bit, and they're probably talking work half of the time anyway.
