ipod touch problem

Hi there

I wonder if someone could help.

A few weeks ago my ipod touch (generation 1) required an update. So as I plugged it into my laptop as per usual – but then the update appeared to crash. There was then a requested to “restore to factory settings” – but when I choose this option – it worked for around 5-7 minutes before crashing. The ipod was then stuck partly in the process of restoring – so couldn’t work.

My laptop is a HP pavilion note book.

“error 1603” came up as the first problem.
I attempted to restore the ipod a couple of times but the same thing happened each time - it starts restoring for 5-7 minutes, but then it crashes again and again.

Did most of the available options Apple’s websites offers in this “error 1603” situation. I updated the itunes – no change.

However – it may possibly be the something to do with the USB – as I plug in the lead – I hear the “something’s plugged in” alert…then a few seconds later it appears to eject as the “something has been unplugged” alert comes up.

All other items in the USB ports work fine. I have also attempted to use the iPod’s USB in all 3 ports on my laptop. Same result each time. I have also used another cable – and the same problem persists. And when the plugged/unplugged alerts come up – the ipod has the charging symbol on! So it is plugged in.

the My Computer panel isn’t reading anything plugged in when I check that.

I took my laptop and ipod to a friend, who is quite knowledgeable about software issues. He was able to restore and update the ipod on his PC without problems straight away!!!!

So at this point – It was obviously the laptop/software was to blame. I uninstalled all itunes software items from my laptop – including Bonjouir, etc. and had them reinstalled again.

Plugged in the ipod once again – and it appeared to work for 5-7 minutes as before stopping and crashing – just like last time. But “error 14” came up this time.

My friend was able to restore the ipod on his computer – placed on a few albums – so at least I had something to use until I got it fixed. I have also used another USB cable to ipod to laptop - same problem.

However, I have been unable to fix the software. My friend was not able to work it out either.

Anyone have any ideas?

cheers
