i took my girl westie to my boyfriends house who has a staffi, she has recently been in heat about 2weeks ago however has now stopped bleeding etc for the last week or so. I turned around as i was leaving to find my westie growling and saw the staffi had jumped on her. I dont know if he actually penetrated her or not i was quick to get him off her but is there any chance she might be pregnant from this, it was literally seconds and can she still get pregnant if shes no longer in heat?

is it normal for a dog to try this when the bitch is not in heat?

i know this was careless of me to take her, but i thought dogs would only go for her if shes in heat?

this just happened today, please help if you know about these things im so worried

A bitch's fertile period is to 7 days after the bleeding has stopped. There is usually, but not always, a clear, straw-coloured discharge. She could therefore still be in season, and if he was motivated to try and hump her, she probably was.

Although they plainly did not achieve a tie, if he achieved penetration she could be pregnant. (This is known as a slip mating)

Get her to a vet tomorrow, there is a shot they they can give her to stop any pregnancy implanting successfully. While you're there, book her in to have her spayed in a few weeks time, to avoid this happening again.

I already have her booked but not til May as that is when she can be spayed from this season, according to the receptionist it has to be up to 2 and half months after her season.

how long does a season last for?

and, would a dog who has not been 'done' normally try this with any bitch or would a dog only try to 'do it' with a bitch who is in heat?

also, would my dog not have also bled or yelped etc if he had of penetrated her as she is a virgin?

thanks

i find it a bit odd that people apply terms like "rape" and "virgin" when talking about their pets

My Alsatian had sex with next doors Westmorland. I don't know how he could stoop so low.

A season can last from 10-28 days - a very wide range - which is why it's important to be able to identify the signs! For me, the best indicator is when her vulva has returned to its normal appearance, having been visibly swollen during the fertile period.

A dog will normally only try and penetrate a bitch in season, any other mounting is usually to do with dominance.

Bitches, even maiden bitches (the correct term for a "virgin") do not normally yelp or bleed on being mated. They do not generally have a hymen, if they do, it is known as a stricture and generally requires surgery before mating can take place.

It might have been a good idea to find out all this stuff earlier - I heartily recommend "The Book of the Bitch" (can't recall the author), the bible for breeders and owners of female dogs.

So do I.

Raped indeed.

I'd suggest the OP's Westie led the Staffy on.

I don't know the dog and can't see it, so I wouldn't like to say! I'd ask the vet.

yes i now wish i didnt put rape i couldnt think of wjhat to write - d say violated is more the term to use. i also didnt know 'maiden' was the correct term for an untouched girl dog!

god im really stressed over this, i can't belive how stupid i am, i thought that because shes not bled for over a week it would be okay for her to come along with me i just wish id left her at home now

i really dont think he did penetrate because i got him off within seconds, my dog was growling and im pretty sure her tail was in the way and she was going down to the ground, so she wasnt letting him or anything, but its just in case

Please go and see a vet, Zorbo. It will put your mind at ease; and if there is anything wrong with your Westie, the best place for her is with a vet. The vet should also be able to provide you with plenty of advice for future reference.

I would most definitely get her to the vets for an anti-mate injection.

Many bitches actually stop bleeding when they are fertile (not because their season has ended)

the dogs don't have to tie for pups to result.

if it was literally seconds he probably wont have penetrated her, but take her to the vet for the jab anyway just to be sure

most dogs don;t have brilliant aim, so it takes them a while to get in there

Zorbo, I don't think you need to be too worried, just take your dog to the
vet to put your mind at rest, he may give her a 'morning after' injection
to be on the safe side.

I have a male dog and a bitch, I find that she always growls at him(like
your bitch did) and keeps her tail right down if he tries any 'funny business' just before and during her season. During the fertile part of
it she jumps on him!
I agree with xdow - nothing could have happened in seconds.
PS - Love the title of your thread, couldn't resist popping in for a look.
Good luck, let us know what happens

I thought it was going to be a classist thread berating the chav staffie for thinking he could get it on with the westie.

Tell me about, I've tried to mate my lakelands 3 times now without any success.

My bitch is so dominant, except for one day in each season, she turns round and tries to hump my dog's head as soon as he tries to climb aboard!

I think it's unlikely, but I wouldn't risk it. After all, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of staffy crosses in rescue, it's not as though it will be easy finding good homes for any puppies.

With respect, it seems a bit silly to take a bitch on heat/just finishing a heat, to a house where there's a male dog!
There are already more Staffy/cross dogs in dog homes than any other breed so no more are wanted!

I had a dog called Scruffy when I was younger and she was on a strict lead rule during her season and I thought she had finished being in heat, as she had finished bleeding (I was 13) so I let her off in the local park where a little boy came up and before you know it was doing the doggy thing. He was on top then got off and they spent what felt like forever back to back, he was stuck in her!!! Anyway approx 3months later 8 puppies arrived! We had to donate the spare reception room to Scruffy and her pups, we covered the floor in plastic sheeting.

I told my Mum the next morning, in a note

I do think you should call the vets too, just to be on the safe side.
