The Number 1 single means nothing , its usually just the latest flash in the pan artist that 13 year old girls are listening too.
The Number 1 album is usually more well earned. |

I feel sorry for the youth of today.
Almost every song has "explcit" next to it on itunes. The sexualised videos and lyrics. I dont think it the BBC could bring back TOTP they couldnt show half the songs The charts should be universal with something for everyone and all tastes. |

Just because you may not like a song or genre doesn't mean others shouldn't. Your opinion isn't fact.

Is this going to be another variation of that "All modern music is shit" thread that was around a few months ago?

Five years ago you only needed 20,000 singles sold to get a No. 1 record. Nowadays, you would struggle to get into the Top 10, never mind Top 5. |

How much do you need to sell for a #1 single and album these days?

I hate threads like this. I personally cant stand this weeks number 1, and I dont like quite a lot of the top 10, but at the same time, I respect that other people do. Just because the chart isnt to your personal taste doesnt mean is dying a painful death.

I have never heard this Tinie song before in my life. And I listen to most of what's on the charts. It's fair to say the charts don't honestly reflect the best music or the most popular even.

The charts are extremely misleading.
They represent what is fashionable, what is current. Do people buy a song purely because lots of other people are buying it? I've never cared much about them, because I don't care what music other people are buying. I'm happy if an artist I like does well, but even that does not matter much to me. |

I think the problem with the charts is that it now takes only seconds to download a single and help it get to No.1 whereas in the past it took considerable effort to go out to the shops and physically buy a CD. People can think to themselves "Oh, a new song by XY - wonder what it's like?" And lo and behold, the said song is No.1!

I just don't pay attention to charts. I like to think that I have my own individual taste instead of being pigeon holed into say pop, indie, rock etc. I sometimes look to see how my favourite artist is doing but all in all every time I tune into the chart show I am disappointed so don't really bother with it!

I turned the TV on at 8 last night and not one program was catered specifically to my tastes. Naturally, this means that television is now an obsolete medium for the entire planet.

I check the charts every monday so i always know who is number one, i had the displeasure last night of listening to the chart and heard the current number 1....truly awful however it would seem i would be in the minority if its at number 1 at the minute and i can respect that.

If you've been through puberty I doubt you'd recognise much in the charts.

The charts for me have been ruined since the arrival of X-factor and similar shows.

I think what bothers me about the charts is that it isn't necessarily the 'best' one of the bunch that gets #1 - it's the one that's had the hype, publicity and promotion... this may well be linked with the fact that it's a 'good' song - but I really do think this is rare, otherwise the charts would surely be more versatile than they are.
I'm not one of these types that will write off a song because it's in the charts and therefore it must mean that it's rubbish - Owl City/Alesha Keyes? Hell yes! But to say that sales = units of credibility to a tune is quite likely untrue... It's highly unlikely to be coincidence that The X Factor dictated the majority of #1's from October - December last year, for example. And would ANYBODY admit that Jedward feat. Vanilla Ice was actually good? I love the song, I downloaded it myself, but it got to #2 and it really is a pile of crap, musically speaking ![]() I wish I'd lived in a time when publicity didn't dictate the charts (as my Dad put it, once upon a time people would go out and buy a record because it was good), but when you've essentially got corporate fatcats behind the whole thing, obsessed with making money above everything else, it's unlikely to ever be that way again. Best thing is to not take it too seriously I guess - great music is always out there in some form or other (and now more accessible than ever)... listen to The Chart Show, complain a bit, maybe hear a half decent track or two, and then stick your Pod on and forget about it

The Top 40 has no relevance in the age of the internet when you can sample music freely from myriad places without having to rely on radio to tell you what's hot.
