My friend said to me that Going to a Gig of a band or artist that you really like, is very much what it must be like for those people who go to those massive Church's where people are shaking about and falling to their feet and stuff.

I went to see Lady Gaga in Cardiff International Arena last Wednesday, ever since I've been even more obsessed that I was before. If I am not listening to her music I'm singing it to myself.

As I type these words now, I am listening to 'Dance in the Dark' by Lady Gaga. When I'm driving I'm listening to her album. When I am at work, I am humming the tunes.

Anyone express any interest in the concert I am all over them telling them about it, and how amazing it was and how much I love her.

I was just wondering if anyone, has gone a bit mental after seeing an act perform.

The Music is so loud, the lights and dancers the crowds cheering and chanting. The Fog, oh god the fog. The pure euphoria when she came on. It has all left me a bit addicted to her.

(I fully understand that others may not like or enjoy Lady Gaga, I'd rather this didn't turn into 'I hate that attention seeking whore Man/Women who cant sing' Party.)

Big live shows are designed to make you buy more product from the artists, be that CDs, DVDs, t-shirts... whatever.

So, yes, they are put together in such a way as to impress you and inspire devotion.

It's also quite easy to manipulate individuals when they are in large crowds with a shared focus. This is a reason why football fans become so obsessed. The bigger the crowd, the greater the psychological belief that you're right in what you like and that you share a bond with others - with some people even believing they somehow share a bond with the focus of their attention.

It's really very similar to how the church works. Take a singer at a show who says 'Raise your hands!' and they can get 10,000 people to raise their hands - take that same singer into a pub where nobody knows them, do the same and they'll be told to fck off.

Same with vicars.

When I went to see Leonard Cohen, it was like being in the presence of God - so Yes, definitely

I'm not denying that live shows are a massive commercial opportunity for the artist/record company but do you really think the only point of them is to manipulate people into spending money? How about the creative ambitions of the artist and the desire to play to a live audience?

Psychological belief? I see no reason why you couldn't consider all these people to have a genuine bond between them in the sense that they all like the same artist/team or whatever and are all in the same place enjoying themselves for the same reason. In terms of whether they have a bond with whoever they are watching, it depends what you'd consider to be a "bond." The performer is obviously a big part of the experience.

it's better than a religious exerience as the focus of your attention is real and alive

Sure, that's a part of it too. However, the kind of productions that you'll see at big shows aren't cheap and they are very much designed to leverage money for product.

It's a business.

The OP may have noticed that Lady Gaga's opening support act on this tour has been almost universally panned... but, and it's a big 'coincidence' this, they're the first signing to her record label... thus introducing them to many thousands of people they'd otherwise not be able to get in front of, with all of those devoted Gaga fans knowing they have her seal of approval.

Ker. Ching.

That's what I said, they form a psychological belief.

It's not a real 'bond' because they don't know 99.99+% of the audience, don't talk to them, will never see them again and don't actually know whether the person they've 'bonded' with even likes the same artist or was there under duress.

Its funny, I brought her album The Fame and then she released The Fame Monster which was the same album but with about five extra songs on it, and i didn't bother to buy it again so I illegally downloaded the songs. Since the concert I've had to download them legally off itunes, I just had an urge to because they didn't sounds clear enough or right enough. They were fine quality.

(I know i shouldn't download, but i cant really afford all the music i want )

Yes, but surely the majority of people there came because they wanted to see the concert. The "bond" isn't about knowing the other people in the audience personally, it's just about the shared experience - being all together in the same place for the same reason and actively enjoying the same show - feeding off the energy of the performer and of other audience members, I don't see why it should just be considered a "psychological belief." I think it's also often part of what people pay for when they buy their ticket. It's different from going to the cinema, for example, because you don't get the same level of audience participation. In most live performances, the audience are a very important part of the show.

What is it if it's not a psychological belief, then?

If you feel a 'connection' to somebody you don't know and may not even talk to or interact with, what else can that 'connection' be than a psychological belief?

It's arguable that any 'connection' is a psychological belief - unless you believe in the supernatural, of course (mind you, that's actually a psychological belief in itself).

I know exactly what you mean, I am huge killers fan have been since they started and listen to them alot but also listen to a million other bands too, anyway I saw the killers last year at the LG arena and litterally after the moment I went I was constantly listening to the killers for months after, i was even more obsessed than before, It made my love for them seem like it had started all over again and all those old songs seem so fresh again, i sort of seen them in a different light cus i was there experiencing them for a night and and their songs all remind me of being there and i was totally crazy about them afterwards, it always fades away after a few months and im back to a normal fan again, but yes what you said in your first post definitely happened to me

its happened with lots of other bands ive seen too but used the killers as my main example as i love them lol
