Why no generic IPTV?

BT Vision requires BT Broadband, other services have tie's to other brands or devices, why is there nobody selling a box with a network port/wireless, that works no matter who your ISP is.

If i had the money thats what i would be doing right now, creating a company offering that service. IPTV is great, just nobody has done a decent job of it yet!

Years ago you could get a KISS box for £100 that would stream via your internal network, so the device would not cost much to manufacture, charge X amount a month for unlimited access.

Am i thinking way to simple here? Why have non of the big media players done it yet?

Project Canvas is the UK generic IPTV solution that is in development.

Will give you the chance to buy a "Canvas" enabled box, connect it to your broadband then watch content.

Under "Main Conditions for provisional approval" - references that Canvas will not restrict access to 1 or 2 ISPs but give access to all.

As to why they haven't done it yet - probably because of (preceived) bandwidth issues.

ISP's are happy to offer VOD services because they charge you for it (so they make money back) and the network traffic is kept within their own network.

Even services like BBC iPlayer - if I try and use it on my iphone I need to be connected wirelessly rather than over the 3G network because although the 3G network will stream it fine, Orange have asked the BBC to block it because they don't want the extra network data.

There is a provider of "Generic" IPTV boxes with a network port (and wireless) they are called Fetch TV http://www.fetchtv.co.uk/shop.html.

I have the 8000 model which has BBC iPlayer built in and can stream from my PC and NAS. Their is no true "generic" IPTV service because all data usage has to be paid for.

Doesn't cost me anything extra as I'm on BE Pro which has unlimited data usage.
