I have a cupboard full of video tapes..... there must be 150 tapes at least, containing films, programmes and so on which we've taped off the tv going back 15 years.

Theres old episodes of corrie, simpsons, the bill, news programs, comedys.

Also full episodes of only fools and horses, bottom, young ones e.c.t....

We also have a hugh box of songs tapped off the radio ranging back to the early 80's... (remmeber thoses days,,, taping the top 10 and trying to press the pause buttom before the DJ started talking)

I am breaking the law, according to copyright.

But how many people do this... come on hold your hands up lol

Simple answer is YES

But I wouldn't worry about it !!

Yes, lots of people do this, and yes it is illegal - but I think if you're not showing them down the pub, or at you local 'club', and the stuff isn't available to buy (most stuff isn't) then I think you're OK on a morale stance.

OK course, as an enthusiast, you'll buy you favourite stuff on DVD when it is available,. won't you

BTW the same aplpies to copying CDs to play in the car, either to another CD or to Tape (or in my case MD) - striclty illegal, but no way am I leaving originals in my car !!!

Very good point, but the fact is that recording stuff is not legal. What about the video recorder, or DVD recorder - they allow you to break the law by having a record button on them.

Blank tapes and DVD recorders are 'officially' for recording your own stuff - videos of your kids, tapes of your spouse singing etc !!!

Some countries put a surcharge on blank tapes to pass on in lieu of royalties !!!!!

As for video recorders, HDD recorders etc they are for 'time shifting' of programs - ie to record if you can't watch live, to watch later. It's the archiving, or showing to others that's illegal.

But yes, it is all a bit silly. But the question was is it illegal, and yes it is.
(I'll see if I can remember the url with the info on)

BTW why do portable MD recorder have digital input for recording from CD etc (illegal) but not digital output to transfer recorded stuff to PC for archiving etc (legal) - this is what I use my MD recorder for !

don't tell Beth we're a bunch of criminals, she might kick us off
lets face it we all do it,but as long as we are not trying to profit from it it is unlikley to get us in court, besides which,i have previously borrowed dvd's from people to see if i like them and ended up buying them because i did like them,a purchase i may not have made without the illegal viewing in the first place so they do gain sometimes.

ooh hello Beth,my how lovely you're looking (walks off whistling and acting all innocent )

Yep it is.

Patronising as it sounds - Copyright is about the Right to Copy !!!!!

Copying ANYTHING needs permission form the person that created it.

If I quoted your post on one of my websites, I'd need your permission !

All Intellectual property is 'copy protected' on creation.

It's a big minefield - just be glad you don't have to try and teach it, like I had too

well... the law is blind... so as long as you break the law with out touching it it doesn't matter...

ie... small scale and not large scale...

The law my be blind, but its still outdated, and needs a fair use clause of some sorts.

Its also a legal requiremnet that all men in the UK aged between 14-60 undertake regular Longbow practice, supervised by the local clergy.

The only sensible answer to this - and I have been involved in copyright issues over the years - is the intention behind the copying.

Copyright is enforced by various private agencies like MCPS and the PRS - not the police or other law enforcement agencies.

Whatever the law says, they are only interested in people who break copyright rules for commercial gain or criminal activity.

So your personal collection of VHS tapes or cassettes are fine.

It's whenever money changes hands that they will move in for the kill.

And that applies to all pictures, sound and data, unless they have the technology - like Macrovision - to stop you whether it is for personal use or not.

And the more we go digital, the more they can do to stop you copying I'm afraid!
