Is it true that this forms some kind of verbal contract that makes you legally obliged to pay, or just one of those urban myths?

Just wondering as was in Wagamammas recently, and was asked that question literally within about 30 seconds after I was actually served - I said fine (although I'd hardly touched my food at that point) and the waitress wrote some kind of symbol on my placemat...!?

You really should tell them as soon as there is a problem, that way it gives them an opportunity to put it right.
When we rented out holiday accommodation there was nothing I hated more than people being nice to you all week and then a few days after they left receiving a long letter in the post about things wrong. Tell me on the first day and I will put it right! Grrrr...

I used to feel like that as well. A properly run restaurant will actually want to know if anything is wrong, feedback is important to a well run business. I don't mean being rude and saying the meal is rubbish but politely pointing out the meal is cold/steak tough etc is welcomed. Or it should be. If I owned a restaurant and my chef was sending out shit food but nobody pointed this out, the first I would know of it would be when I went bust through lack of customers.

I think Wagamama out it on your place matt so they don't forget they've already asked.

I hate being asked though, I always have my mouth full!

they do it because some people are idiots, and will eat it even if the food is rubbish, then moan at the end

maybe people shouldn't base their view on restaurants on what they have seen in american pie/road trip type movies

But there have been posts on DS by staff which have done this.

half the people on this place are on a wind up 90 % of the time

I have worked in loads of places that served food, and we never did anything to anyone's food if it got sent back

I'm too polite to complain on the spot, though I will email the company if it was truly dreadful. Only complained once when the food took 1 and a half hours and it was a simple heat up job when the pub was deserted. Got a £20 Voucher

Thats very true.

I'm not saying i've never complained before mine. It takes some for me too though, again because of politeness. I complained when a rare steak was very well done, and took ages to come! Got a free desert for that. What was funny though is that that day was so hot, the cold desert was melted when they served it up to everyone. But we didn't mind about that.

On the flip side, how many times have you been served a meal that isn't up to standard yet there has been no sign of a member of waiting staff to mention it to. I find that far more irritating.

OP, the sign on your mat was probably made to prove the table check had been done. Some 'gastropubs' around here give you a wooden spoon to put in a jug on the table - when the table check has been done they remove the spoon, thereby letting the rest of the staff know not to ask as it can become annoying when loads of them keep interrupting your meal.

I'm not afraid to complain if something isn't up to standard. It embarrasses the life out of my Father-in-Law. He is one of those irritating folk who whinge on and on about a poor meal after the event to anyone who'll listen, but never says something at the time!!

If staff ask too early in the meal I'll just say I haven't had chance to try it yet. And even if you said it was OK earlier on you could still find something that's not quite right half way through.

I have worked in enough food serving places to know not to ever be a customer in one
It doesn't always take for a complaint to be made for you to get something in your food that should not be there.

A week spent working in a restaurant kitchen or two may well open your eyes as to the things some staff like to do.
And yes, doing that on purpose is one. (One of the more innocent things, I should say.)
