Fingers In Too Many Pies.......

I don't know if I'm the only one who dislikes this - but I can't stand to see chefs/cooks on the TV with their hands in everything - especially when it's something extremely slimy or messy. I just think it looks disgusting.

I find it even worse if the person doesn't look particularly clean either. Anyone else feel the same?

My mum is obsessed with chefs "not looking clean" on TV. I think it tends to be hairy men that she finds least clean though it's not entirely rational.

Doesn't really bother me, cooking requires handling food unless you want to make your life difficult.

I can't abide it when Delia kneads pastry with her hands with her rings on. Rings can be filthy things, we wash our hands when cooking, surely you'd take your rings off too?

To be fair, neither is Delia.
She's a home cook showing people how she cooks at home.

One thing I that annoys me a little on tv shows these days is the overkill of health and safety. Shouldn't common knowledge and judgement suffice???

Two examples
when a stew or something similar is being prepared. The meat is cut on a board and then the chef goes to cut the veg - which is going to be cooked in the same pan as the meat - on the same board. The presenter tells them to change the board and wash their hands before touching the veg. WHY!

The amount of spoons chefs seem to go through on TV cookery shows because every time they taste the dish for taste/seasoning the put the spoon in the sink.

If you are cooking at home, and are free from infectious diseases, then surely just use your common sense with food safety.

Argh, my inlaw wound me up recently about changing the board to cut the veg on, when its going in the same pot as the meat which is going to be stewed for ages!

She couldn't explain it, yeah but...

She wont cut meat on her veg board, only has one board, so uses scissor to cut meat! WTF!

Relax people.

You have an immune system.

Use it or lose it.

I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular with my OP - and making pastry by hand doesn't bother me too much (although I know it comes out just as well in the food processor) - what i meant was when people are marinating something all gluppy or covered in yoghurt - and they do it with their hands! YUK! - at times like that I would use two spoons and I know other people might put on those gloves instead of using their bare hands.

Also, when you see people lick their fingers, then touch the food they're going to serve - or wiping stuff from plates with manky cloths - and as was mentioned somewhere before on here - a chef LICKING a cloth - and then wiping the plates with it!

Maybe I do have OCD or something - but the separate chopping board thing doesn't bother me - although I think it's right if chefs taste food with a fresh spoon each time.

The whole use of the word gluppy means its just a perception thing for you, especially when you aren't bothered by pastry.
