Why are so many breakfast cereals "fortified" with vitamins and iron?

Surely if they were actually any good for you that wouldn't be necessary.

Or am I missing some kind of point?

Probably not missing a point. Personally i've never bothered with cereals. I've never liked the suger they add for you. Its one of those things i've always seemed like a marketing scam, before the whole Kelloggs bars came along and stuff.

There are a few cereals out there which are mostly made out of cereal, as opposed to sugar salt and gunk.

I can't remember the full and exact reason for it, but indeed, many cereals have very little nutritional value of their own.

Recently, that guy on BBC whose name escapes me, made 'home made' cornflakes, and believe me, the process they go through is not very appetising, and indeed, the extras were added to actually turn them back into something resembling food - nutritionally speaking.

It is not such a bad thing though on the whole, as so many people have not got the first clue about balanced diets, and where to get the right nutrition, especially for their growing kids, so lacing their favourite cereals with vitamins etc. is a good way to ensure they get something - even if not ideal.

Apparently however, the iron used is pointless - they literally use iron filings, which is all but indigestible.

The only cereal I tend to eat is porridge on a regular basis. I don't think it matters if they fortified with vitamins etc, a lot of bread is too, it's not a bad thing really.

Er yes, Jimmy Doherty's program (thanks for the name check lol).
He used them, and said clearly that so do Kellogs and all foods which have Iron added.

I am sure that is watchable somewhere but I have not looked any further into it.

I also saw the Jimmy Doherty program and was shocked they used iron fillings in cereals! I hardly eat cereals myself, except for Porridge, as they are mostly full of sugar (and often salt) which I don't need!

I thought it saw that episode but clearly missed a lot of it!

He blatantly just poured some iron filings straight from a little pot, into his liquid mix, and explained how they are standard as an additive, but pointless as we cannot digest it.
It's all for show of course - just so they can SAY it has iron in it.

It does make me wonder about iron supplementary tablets though - are they the same? Are they really any good?

Stick to green veg like spinach and you can't go wrong.

A couple of months ago there was a programme on Dutch television - Keuringsdienst van Waarde - that confirmed the use of ordinary iron filings (powder). They even tracked down the Swedish ironworks that supplies the (high quality) powder to Kellog.
You can test it yourself. Let a cornflake float on water and you can move the flake around with a strong magnet.

There was also a nutrition professor who told us that metallic iron is very hard to absorb by the human body and...............
consuming it with milk makes it even harder. His guess was that no benificial amounts of iron were absorbed by eating iron fortified breakfast cereals with milk.

The professor was astounded at the thought of iron filings in the cornflakes. But the above test convinced him that it must be true. Further lab testing confirmed the presence of metallic iron.

In Denmark it's prohibited to add iron to the cornflakes, as there are no health benefits.

Iron supplements are non-metallic like iron sulfate etc. and are more easily absorbed by the human body than metallic iron.

Thanks.
But, why then do these companies not use that source or iron I wonder (I am not expecting you to know lol).

Of course, silly silly me - the oldest reason in humanity for cut corners... MONEY!!

All I know is that I have not even looked at a box of cornflakes since that program - just because they are a complete waste of time.
I will stick to Weetabix or porridge.

Cereals are rubbish IMO. They are way overpriced flakes of cardboard as far as I am concerned. They originally have little or no nutrition ( except the milk) and are fortified with stuff as a marketing exercise.

So yeah you're right they aren't much cop for you.

Eat decent food
