Cook the chips, drink the Irn Bru and use the Frosties as an exfoliant.

Jalfrezi:

2 tomatoes (skinned and chopped)
1 onion
1 clove garlic
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp garam masala
2 tsp turmeric
oil
lemon juice
salt
sugar

and obviously potatoes for chips. Assuming you had the ingredients in and that the curry had no meat in, it might come to less than a pound! Definitely couldn't be done without meat though.”

If you were starting from scratch you couldn't do that for under a quid though .... you'd have to have all those spices already in.

I dont go in Asda, i come out in a rash if I am over exposed to tattoed, vest wearing F**k wits.
And I disagree with Asdas policy of providing an aisle where parents can thrash their children.

I thought this was about that excellent Spike Milligan TV series, Curry and Chips.

I bought curry sauce 'n' chips for a pound at Iceland once, just to see what they were like, when I got them home I noticed that they were 'microwave only' OK I thought , let's give them a go.
What a mistake! they chips came out pure white and although I had followed the instructions fully, there were rock hard, but boiling hot throughout, so could be cooked no more, the sauce was ok , but really the chips were some of the worst things I have ever eaten.

As you say, if you had all the ingredients in you might be able to do it for under £1, but if you already had all of those including the spices would you be considering buying £1 curry & chips in the first place? It's not just the ingredients to be priced though - you'd also have to cost the prep time, the gas/electricity used, the value of the time you spend washing & drying-up afterwards, the cost of the water & washing-up liquid, & I bet I've left other things out that should be borne in mind.

If you didn't have the ingredients, I don't believe you could do it for £1 even leaving meat out of the equation. For a start, you couldn't buy just enough for one serving, so you'd have to calculate the cost of the ingredients divided by how many servings you got from each item. Also, some things would end up being a waste of money (e.g. lemon juice), because if you wouldn't be using them again for months (if ever) they'd go off & you'd end up throwing them away. Even the other recipe linked to would still require a fair spend if you didn't have the ingredients already. You'd also have to factor in the cost of the time you spend shopping for each item (you do want it to taste good enough to eat ) if you wouldn't have bought them otherwise.

As much as I like cooking, I very much doubt I could do it all for under £1, so if I liked curry & chips (I don't) I'd give the pack a try once. At the end of the day though, it's not just the cost, it's the taste & nutrition that matters most.

Yes, I often read cookery books and they say things like "and from your cupboard you will need...." as if everyone keeps all the spices etc always in their cupboards.

What if you are just starting out? Lol.

Curry powder or garam masala, plain yoghurt and onion makes a passable chip shop style curry sauce. If you've got some turmeric, then chuck that in as well.

The curry sauce referred to in this thread is not, and will never be, curry. Curry is a term for various spiced dishes served as a meal in South Asian (mostly Indian) countries.

Bit different from my Bisto chip shop curry sauce:

Potato Starch
Maltodextrin?
Vegetable oil
Dried onion
Salt
Wheatflour
Yeast extract
Tomato powder
Spices!
Herb extract & then some E numbers

I'd much rather buy a Sainsbury's £2.49 10" Pizza. There's much less that can be suspect about a bit of dough with some visibly obvious vegetables on it, than a concotion of indeterminate gunk (wouldn't go near their meaty pizzas though).

A decent cook book will tell you what are "store cupboard essentials", though I agree it looks quite daunting to someone starting out cooking.
You can do a lot with just some mixed herbs, chilli powder, black pepper & curry powder. To save money be wary of bulk buying spices/herbs as you will rarely use anywere near all of it before they go out of date (and end up tasteless).
If you have a garden or even window box fresh herbs can be easy to grow - chives, basil, sage, oregano and marjoram do well even on a windowsill. Rosemary and thyme do well in the garden and mint is very easy (but needs to sit in a pot in the soil as it will spread like wildfire).

Can't say I have ever tasted a chip shop style curry sauce with yogurt in!
Sounds more like a dip/raita or coating

I noticed they had tubs of Maykway in stock when I went last night. That's better imo.

Ingredients

Wheat Flour , Curry Powder (Fenugreek, Turmeric, Coriander, Mustard Seed, Fennel, Cumin, Chillies, Garlic, Ginger) , Salt , Sugar , Flavour Enhancer Monosodium Glutamate , Non Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil .

Asda's Curry & Chips ready meal is OK for a snack but it's a smallish 400g portion and the chips come out soggy from the curry sauce.

Are we talking Chinese style curry sauce here? If so I can get 4 packets of chinese style curry sauce for a quid in my local market. And it's very nice too.

I didn't realise someone had called the food police.

Get off your high horse. They are actually really really tasty.
