The only artists I can think of who truly cracked america over the past few years have really been Joss Stone and Natasha Bedingfield

Natasha has cracked more then one hit into the top 40. She's had about 5/6 top 40 hits that have all sold well. Both albums sold modestly both being certified Gold. Joss Stone has had three successful albums. Two going Gold and another being Platinum. Although her recent one has sold poorly.

Yet, both these artists are actually overlooked these days and yet have maintained staying power.

As for arena tours...even Beyonce can't sell out hers...does that mean she hasn't made it ?

I think when your album is selling it means you have broken through, that shows people are interested enough to invest in you, the artist, and not just in a catchy song.”

I agree about the album, but I also think selling out a big tour is a huge part in cracking America.

I did say Artists. Not artists/groups.

I agree with you. Both Joss Stone and Natasha have shown the most longevity out of all the British artists that have managed to cross over. The jury is still out on Duffy and Adele but IMO both will be fine particularly Adele. Also if Amy Winehouse ever gets around to recording another album (can't see it happening personally), I can see that being a huge seller.

Could be a good year for the Brits, maybe not Cheryl though, I think Americans will spot the contradiction and the weak performances.

Congratulations to him! For now he should just concentrate on celebrating rather than worrying about longevity. That comes later.

I'm not sure about Adele. Her album was flopping anyway. Her sales were only began improving when she was nominated for the grammy's, where as Duffy had already maintained a gold album and a top 30 hit way before the grammy's were announced.

Leona could still have a future US career. Just not with this album unfortunley.

Initially Duffy was doing better and not surprisingly so since Mercy and her album were both smashing globally...that in turn translated into far more hype on US shores compared to Adele which translated into more overall interest and made it much easier to secure promo slots.

But towards the end of the year Adele totally stole her thunder with a single performance on Saturday Night Live..I'm still not sure how her label/management managed to get her on there but that was a genius move. Her album sales started to explode and there was huge buzz in the Grammy community at just the right time which eventually led to two Grammy wins and huge critical acclaim.

Again I think both Adele and Duffy will do fine but I think Adele will do better. This time around she will not have any issues securing promo slots. Both Duffy and Adele, even Joss Stone have one big advantage over Natasha or Leona in that they don't depend on fickle pop tarts to do well.

As for Leona...it's going to be incredibly difficult for her to turn things around. She would need a massive smash..and even then I don't see radio jumping on it after getting burned big time by Happy. I personally think her career will resemble Kelly Clarkson's career going forward. She will do alright but no longer be the sensation she once was.

Yeah, it will be difficult her to do well. I disagree with you about Adele, but hey i respect your opinion.

I guess we will see, both ladies should be releasing new albums sometime this year I would think. I know Adele is currently working on her new album.

Yes both are

By the way, i think we better get back to discussing Taio before someone comes in and moans we are going majorly off topic

I think his collab with Kesha will be his next US single. Kesha is a big name at the moment and could give him a second hit.

I got the impression from Leona she wasn't happy with the album anyway and wants to go in another direction.

Shes just signed a deal that gives her rights to everything..

Break Your Heart must have been playing in the clubs, even before it was released in the US

But no doubt Taio Cruz won't get any UK press coverage for this achievement, because he isn't from X Factor. Whereas JLS got an article in The Sun yesterday saying 'America loves JLS' just because one of their songs got played once on US radio. What a joke.”

JLS song got played once ?
They have actually been playlisted on major radio stations in the U.S like Z100

Adele got lucky with that SNL show - it also featured Sarah Palin and had a huge audience because SNL had been satirising Palin mercilessly.

Adele spoilt this a bit by cancelling gigs because she wanted to be with her boyfriend.

How will Duffy do with the 2nd album? Who knows? Most of the US Duffy love on twitter etc is coming from black women especially.
