Humax HDR some further design issues

Ok,

couple of things been bugging me for a while that Humax should address in the next box:

1. Channel change direction inconsistency - the silver circular button is pressed up wards to go down the channels when viewing.

eg to down from BBC 1 to BBC 2 you press the upper side.

However, in the epg you press the down side to go down the channels ie the opposite way around.

Would it not make more sense to use the down side to go down the channels in both instances instead of one side for viewing and the opposite side in the epg? Sometimes I occassionally forget which way to go because of the inconsistency and its also a very clumsy way to operate a box having the same function working in opposite directions depending on whether you have the picture on or are in the epg.

2. Series Recordings - could it no be implemented so that the Humax can detect related series in the schedule and offer a series recording?

eg. Last night I had Bondi Rescue (Zone Reality) set to record on a series recording. It was showing in the epg as usual as 7-7.30pm and 7.30-8.00pm. In fact it turned out the 7-7.30pm was the last one of the series although the epg showed "Bondi Rescue" immediately following it.

It turned out when you expand the epg information the hidden bit shows "- Bali" ie. "Bondi Rescue - Bali" - it's an entire new series of shows sitting in the previous series same slot.

The result of this was the 1st programme recorded but the 2nd programme did not because the EPG / recorder see it as an entirely new series and thus it requires an entirely new schedule to be set.

Had I not happened to watch it live last night and notice that the second programme wasn't recording I could have missed the entire Bondi Rescue - Bali series. Luckily I did see it and set a new scheduled recording.

My point is though, could the Humax not be made to spot a related series and offer a series recording?

I understand not everyone would want this on all of the time as constant offerings might be intrusive, but maybe something could be incorporated on a series recording by recording basis whereby as you set a series recording you have the option of asking the box to keep an eye out for related series thus efefctively enabling it off by default but settable to on for specific individual series recordings when they are set.

This would only work if the broadcasters related the crid codes in some way. AFAIK the freesat+ spec has no such requirement nor a end of series flag so there is no way any freesat+ box could do this.

I don't see the problem with the scrolling through channel epgs? When you go from BBC1 to BBC2 you go from channel 101 to 102 which is going up, so pressing the up button is the right thing to do.

I have never had a problem with it.

Not necessarily, could the Humax not perform a search using the key words and requiring an exact match? That's already a software feature and a simple instruction for it to do it automatically when the feature was enabled would surely be all thats needed.

Agreed but the direction is reversed in the epg which doesn't make sense.

If you're watching the picture UP takes you from BBC 1 to BBC 2.

If you're in the epg Down takes you from BBC 1 to BBC 2.

It's inconsistent. As down makes sense in the epg it makes sense to have down as the direction for both.

Using the up button whilst watching TV to go from channel 102 to 101 wouldn't make any sense. When TV viewing the up/down buttons mirror the P up/down buttons increasing/decreasing channel numbers respectively, not moving down/up a non-displayed list. In the EPG and other navigable elements of the UI the cursor moves in the direction you press this is completely consistent with almost every TV user interface design ever created. Navigating the EPG grid and changing channel are separate operations that use the keys in the most logical way.

I must admit, I coded my Harmony remote the way the OP suggests. If it's further down the EPG, I press "down".
