Mmmmmm, today we made the most gorgeous hot cross buns. We made the dough in the breadmaker, then cooked in oven for 12 mins (gas mark 7).

Heres the dough recipe
yeast - 1/2tsp
strong white flour - 250g
sugar - 1 tsp
butter - 25g
milk powder - 1tbsp
salt - 1/2tsp
1 medium eggg
water - 100ml
cinnamon - 1tsp
mixed spice - 1/2tsp
mixed dried fruit - 100g

Its the first dough we've done using the fruit/seed dispenser on the breadmaker aswell. Does a good job! Its a panasonic sd-255.

Method:
* divide mixture into 8 balls. Place on a lightly greased baking tray and allow to prove at 40oC/90oF until doubled in size (approx 20 mins), make a past with approx 2tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water and pipe a cross over the buns, or top with thin slices of shortcrust pastry.

* bake in a preheated oven at 220oC/425oF/gas mark 7 for 15-20mins or until golden brown.

* while still hot, brush with a sugar glaze - 40g sugar in 4tbsp water, boiling until a syrup is reached - 5 mins.

Oooooh, that appeals! I've got everything I need to make them too, apart from the milk powder - would using half milk/half water do instead?

I'd rather not be branded with him anyway.

They tasted amazing, and thats not much for 8 people anyway is it? Then again, thats not including the sugar glaze after aswell

Don't think ole Matey would've approved of the use of a breadmaker - I think he thought a microwave was an evil contraption!

I love h c buns - although only ever made chelsea buns. I tend to buy the posh hc buns from M&S - but not too often, they're flippin addictive toasted and buttered!

OP - having only ever bought Hot X buns previously, you have persuaded me to give these a go - I will buy the ingredients during the week and give it a try next week. Thanks!
